Softmaker Office has better MS Office file compatibility. Version 2006 is freely downloadable, while 2008 is available for free registration until the end of the holidays. Lotus Symphony Office is darn slow, especially running on netbooks.
A new Windows PC also needs PC Decrapifier to uninstall all the pre-intalled crud that ships with the PC. Revo Uninstaller is also fit for the task. Paint.NET is a great mid-level image editor. Pidgin can handle all your IM needs. Windows Live Writer is a must for bloggers. And LastPass has replaced KeePass as my password manager.
