Get Returnil System Safe Pro for free
Windows Steady State is a great app -- but it's not going to be sticking around much longer and it doesn't work with 64-bit Windows. Returnil System Safe is a nice alternative which does support Windows x64, and while it's normally $40, you can score a one-year license free of charge right now.
Returnil offers virtualization-based protection of your system, as well as built-in malware protection. It's also got a handy system rollback feature that lets you recover individual files that were changed, or set the entire system back to the way it was at your chosen point in the past.
With virtual mode enabled, a quick reboot is all it takes to completely undo intrusions from pesky malicious software. It's a great way to keep your less-savvy friends from getting themselves in trouble online. Even if they do install Super Antivirus Pro 2011 Gold Plus and have bogus alerts popping up all over their screen, all they've got to do is shut down and start again to make it all go away.
Registration is required, so use a disposable email address if you've got qualms about giving out your primary one.

As useful as this sounds, the UI looking like malware just bugs me

Hi Lee,
Thank you for your interest in Returnil System Safe 2011.
@Bill: "How does this compare to Faronics Deep Freeze, or Comodo Time Machine (free)?"
Returnil Support: RSS and DF are only comparable in regards to their use of System Level Virtualization, also known as Instant System Recovery and/or boot-to-restore. Beyond this, their design and strategy is completely different:
1. Deep Freeze is designed from a recovery perspective and came out of the need to support remote servers and computers in isolated regions. RSS/RVS on the other hand came directly out of a security focus where all included components address their specific competency without overlap and work to also cover the inherent weaknesses in the other components.
2. RSS is focused on the proactive concept of TIME TO REMOVAL of malware rather than simply blocking or detecting it as traditional security strategies work. DF on the other hand is only focused on restoration and can only serve as part of an intelligent layered approach. DF also suffers from issues related to virtualization circumventing malware which is why they also recommend incorporating their separate AntiExecute solution. In RSS, the AE is included...
So in this case you would be comapring a part of a strategy to a product (RSS) that has a more comprehensive vertical layering approach that reduces the number of applications in a given strategy while provide a higher level of overall security.

Please do not confuse ease of use and making the controls as simplified as possible cloud your judgment. Our team came out of the Antivirus, Antispyware industries as well as both privacy and security communities with a long history of malware research, antimalware development, and a collective goal to bring about the end of Industrialized malware as quickly as humanly possible.
We are dedicated to what we do and stand behind our solutions. We encourage you and anyone else interested in our approach to try the software and see for yourself how effective it can be for securing your PCs and networks. We also want to hear your feedback; regardless of whether it is good or bad as the former validates our work and the latter allows us to improve our software going forward.
With kind regards
Mike
