No Windows 8 demo at CES in January?
Thanks to a single sentence in a New York Times article, a number of blogs are trumpeting the first public demonstration of Windows 8 at CES in January. It was already known that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer would be on stage to showcase a handful of slates, but would they really be running the first builds of Windows.next already?According to the Times, a source "with knowledge of Microsoft's plans" believed "Ballmer might demonstrate a tablet and other companion devices running the next operating system, Windows 8." However, as Tom Warren points out, Microsoft is currently laying out the groundwork for Windows 8 -- planning and preparing for what Ballmer called Microsoft's "riskiest product bet."
January seems a bit soon to be showing off something your CEO thinks is your "riskiest bet," especially considering this is the same company that just tried to launch the Kin. While there may indeed be a prototype or concept device on display, there's a good chance it could run an existing flavor of Windows with a slate-specific UI on top. Windows 8 itself, however, will likely not be on display.

Lee, I generally like your articles, but this one, like the ones you're critiquing, is pure speculation with a misleading title.

@Drew Green It's speculative, sure -- no one at Microsoft has told me yes or no. But Tom's got a proven track record, and if he's inclined to say no -- I'm inclined to agree.
BTW, I'm certainly glad to hear that you generally like my posts!
Also, am I the only one that thinks Ballmer looks a little bit like Frank from "Everybody Loves Raymond" in that picture?

@Lee Mathews : More like Young Frankenstein.

@Lee Mathews Have you had any complaints from anyone about the comments not working since the site relaunch w/ Firefox? I can never seem to get them to load with FF and Chrome seems to be hit or miss. IE works fine, though. I've disabled Ad Block Plus to no avail, so I'm a bit lost. Any suggestions?

It doesn't make sense. Windows 7 is selling like gangbusters. I doubt it has hit its peak. Why make it look bad by trouncing out Win8, which, presumbly, would be better than Win7?
