Twitter Tuesday - Kiwi for Mac and Tweetdeck for Android get updates

Hey, Twitter fans! It's been a while since a truly promising Twitter app has come along on the Mac, especially with development on Tweetie 2 apparently abandoned. Well, a scrappy little app called Kiwi is about to get a big update, and it's looking like a serious contender.

First launched in 2009, Kiwi's big selling points include custom themes, content filters to hide tweets you don't care about, and customizable groups. Kiwi 2, coming next week, promises a new tabbed interface, a slick profile view, new themes, and detachable, draggable timelines. It looks like the prettiest Twitter client to hit Apple desktops in some time, and if you don't agree, you can theme it yourself using a bit of HTML and CSS.

Priced at 10 dollars, Kiwi should make a good buy for any Mac-using Twitter fiend.

TweetDeck for Android Updates With Landscape Mode, URL Shorteners, and TwitPic

TweetDeck for Android has updated to version 1.0.3, a minor upgrade that adds landscape mode for all parts of the app. Third party services TwitPic and Bit.ly are now integrated, too, for photo sharing and URL shortening, respectively. You can get all the details in Vlad's full report, posted yesterday on Download Squad.

Twitterers Back Man Convicted for Joking Tweet in #IAmSpartacus Campaign

@pauljchambers My offer still stands. Whatever they fine you, I'll pay x #twitterjoketrialless than a minute ago via web

When Paul Chambers, a 27-year-old accountant, was convicted last week for a joking tweet about blowing up an airport, Twitter users banded together to support Chambers and defend their freedom to tweet without prosecution. Using the hashtag #IAmSpartacus (a reference to the classic film Spartacus, where the title character is hidden by other gladiators claiming to be him), they reposted the text of Chambers' original tweet: "Crap! Robin Hood airport is closed. You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high!!"

Noted British comedian/intellectual Stephen Fry even offered -- through Twitter, of course -- to pay Chambers' fines for him. Chambers, however, is appealing one more time, to the British high court. You can follow the case with the hashtag #twitterjoketrial

Twitter to Expand Operations to Europe in 2011

Twitter has announced plans to hire employees in Europe starting next year. According to a Twitter spokesperson who talked to Mashable, "Twitter plans to have a small number of people on the ground in Europe in 2011. We're currently researching locations and potential candidates." Speculation is that these will be sales and business development positions, as Twitter continues its quest to make money in new markets. Less than half of Twitter users are in the U.S. now, so the expansion makes complete sense.

And that's Twitter Tuesday for this week, guys! I'll be back after Thanksgiving with another edition, so make sure to send me your favorite Twitter apps over next week. Bye for now!
