TeamViewer Beta 6 is now out, remote control freaks rejoice
Let me just come right out and say it: TeamViewer is the best remote control application for Windows PCs today. I've tried numerous apps, and nothing comes close to TeamViewer's performance on a WAN. For LAN situations, Windows Remote Desktop rocks. But when you've got the whole wide Internet between you and the computer you'd like to control, nothing beats TeamViewer. I use it several times per week, for extended sessions (hours on end), and it's always a joy to use. So yes, I'm a rabid fan, and I'm not ashamed.
And now, TeamViewer has announced a new beta for version 6. If you use TeamViewer 5, you'll notice the look and feel is different. But changes are more than skin-deep:
- Custom QuickSupport is a feature that lets you connect to existing customers much more quickly, without getting their ID and password newly every time.
- QuickJoin is a new feature that lets you send the session data to participants beforehand. This is great for presentations – the participants connect to your computer, and not vice versa. You no longer need to enter the data for each of the participants manually.
- Reconnection after reboot makes sure TeamViewer will re-establish the connection even after the remote computer went down and came back up.
There are several other options; if you're not using TeamViewer yet, you really should start. But remember this is still a beta, so if you use it to control nuclear reactors or a personal army of killer robots, you may want to hold off on the upgrade.

I'll try it out when there is an Android app available... Until then, a free account with LogMeIn does the job just great.

Agreed, that Android app was an arm and a leg but totally worth it.

I love Teamviewer; as the go to tech support guy for the family, instead of having to give instructions over the phone, I can have them pull up Teamviewer, and I can just fix the problem.
The REALLY surprising thing is how well it runs on bad systems. I had my parents' netbook hooked up, several states away, and it was just as fast as their quad core, 6gb ram desktop. THAT alone is worth a small round of applause.

I highly disagree with this article. A product by LogMeIn called http://join.me is FAR LESS invasive... you dont even need to install anything on your system. I can say if the performance is better or not but the simplicity speaks for itself.
TomSrNov 17th 2010 1:31PM
Teamviewer doesn't need to be installed.

I've asked this question a few times on this site when Teamviewer posts are made, and I have yet to get an explanation. Why would you ever use this over Logmein? It seems like one of those things where people are intentionally choosing a product that is less convenient to use.
Unless I am missing something, it works out like this for me...
To remote control a computer:
TeamViewer = download application on computer 1, download application on computer 2, ask person at computer 2 for an ID number, record that somewhere for future use, initiate a connection, enter that ID number, remotely control their computer.
Logmein = download application on computer 2, login to website, click on their computer icon, control computer.

@NonprofitTech,
what are you talking about? You sound like a salesman...
I have to correct your comment. With logmein, you first have to create an account on their website. Why did you not mention this?
Haha, nice try for a bad product placement here!
NonprofitTechNov 20th 2010 8:57PM
I personally don't see initially creating an account as being part of the remote control process... but I did mention that you have to login to a website, which of course would assume an account.
This still seems much much easier to do than what it takes to do the same thing with TV. I'm open to someone explaining to me how that is not the case... I feel like I am missing something... but every time I ask, like I did here, all I get is defensive replies or accusations.
djangofanNov 17th 2010 2:21PM
I disagree... when you go to their site it downloads a .exe setup file. I downloaded it. I tried it. When you run the file it asks you if you want to run standalone or install it. My point is that join.me doesn't have those 2 extra steps... its much simpler.
djangofanNov 17th 2010 2:23PM
I totally agree with what "NonprofitTech" says. by the way: Join.ME = LogMeIn (the same company)

Teamviewer supports voice and video chat while sharing screens in the free version. It also supports VPN, file sharing/uploading etc. again in the free version.

Another thing that I like about TW: Your dad/mom/sister/brother/friend etc. buys a new computer, and he/she's living overseas. He/she asks how to x, you send him the client module link of TW, and tell him to run that and tell you the id/pass, and that's it. No installation, no need to login to log me in and install/configure etc. If you can physically access the remote computer once, you can setup either TW or logmein though.
JamesNov 18th 2010 7:37AM
if you try and run the file you download, you can chose to run instead of install it.
djangofanNov 18th 2010 3:19PM
You guys are missing the point. LogMeIn's join.me is by far the easiest remote desktop viewing solution out there. They took the infamous ShowMyPc.com which everyone knows is super easy and made it even simpler. TeamViewer simply IS NOT easier than Join.Me nor ShowMyPc . The fact that I even mentioned showmypc just proves I am the most experienced commenter here.... even more so that the person that posted this article.

djangofan and NonprofitTech
are abviously the same person. They advertise for logmein here.
> you dont even need to install anything on your system.
This is not true. You _have_ to install the application from the join.me website.
Stop making product placement here dudes!

I'd also choose LogMeIn over Teamviewer any day..However, I'd also recommend Techinline (www.techinline.com) which significantly less expensive than LMI Rescue. Although it doesn't offer all the bells and whistles of LMI, it pretty much includes all of the essential features one would need for remote supporting people
