Install Android 2.2 Froyo on your jailbroken iPhone 3G over-the-air with Bootlace
Yes, that headline is no mistake! You can indeed install the latest version of Froyo, Android 2.2.1, on a jailbroken iPhone 2 or 3G, and you can do it all without a computer. Redmond Pie has put together a nice step-by-step guide to getting Android on your iPhone with Bootlace 2.1, but in short: it's as simple as installing Bootlace 2.1 from Cydia, running it, and firing up iDroid. The rest is done for you, and frankly, it seems incredibly user friendly. Funny how the jailbreak community has made the process of installing Froyo on an iPhone easier than updating many Android phones.Get your Android on by adding the repository "http://repo.neonkoala.co.uk'" to Cydia, and jump on over to Redmond Pie for their blow-by-blow guide.

I wish they'd release a version for the iPhone 4 -- I'd love to try this out.

Okay... I feel stupid for even having to ask this but does it replace iOS in some way, or is this more of an emulated setup?
Samuel GibbsNov 9th 2010 12:04PM
No, it's kind of like dual booting.

I'm curious on compatibility... I've got a jailbroken iPhone 3G with iOS 3.1.2 just sitting around collecting dust.
King AntoniusNov 9th 2010 12:08PM
I don't have one to test it with, but I assume it would work but the performance would probably be a bit poor. If it's just collecting dust, give it a shot and let us know!

Oi, I feel more stupid now. YES this will work on your 3G with 3.1.2 as long as your are jailbroken as it is designed for the 3G. I'm giving it a shot on the 3GS with 4.1 to see what happens.

Yeah, I saw it'll work, but the latest info I've seen was back from June and said that wifi and sound don't work in Android. Well 5 months later you'd expect those issues were hashed out, but I don't see anything outlining what to expect when running Android on the 3G regarding hardware compatibility.

"Funny how the jailbreak community has made the process of installing Froyo on an iPhone easier than updating many Android phones."
You mean, except for the part where you have to jailbreak your iPhone and install Cydia first? Once you've rooted an Android phone, ROM Manager is both free and pretty darn simple to use.
Now, rooting Android itself ranges from stupidly easy (Univeral Androot, SuperOneClick, Unrevoked) to "be careful you don't brick your phone" (the 2-hour old as of this comment perma-root & s-off solution for the HTC Vision/G2).
Samuel GibbsNov 9th 2010 12:12PM
Lol, yeah, you still have to install something though before you can manage your ROMs. Rooting Android is practically the same as jailbreaking iOS, same goal at least. Cydia is automatically installed when you jailbreak iOS, unless you specify it without. Admittedly, for most iOS versions, jailbreaking an iPhone requires a trip back to a desktop, but once that's done everything is incredibly simple. I was just amazed at how easy it was to install a completely foreign OS on the iPhone. I wonder if Steve dies a little inside every time someone installs Android on an iPhone?

And on the n900, install rootsh and nitdroid packages from the extras-devel repository, just click the package and it installs. Open up terminal, type "sudo gainroot" to get root and then type "nitdroid" to open up the installer. Type "YES" to confirm installation, and it automatically formats your microsd card and installs froyo, multiboot, etc. No hassle. :)

I just reverted my iPhone 3G to 4.1, then jailbroke it with the latest Redsn0w, followed the guide but Bootlace says it's unsupported...
When can they come with an update that enabled you to use Redsn0w as they say is supported?
StillrayNov 9th 2010 1:40PM
As a Samsung Captivate owner, I find it unsettling that a two-year old iPhone gets Froyo before I do.
SugarDaddyNov 9th 2010 2:00PM
Jailbroken iPhone. Don't forget that. You could root your phone and get froyo right now.
StillrayNov 9th 2010 2:08PM
This is true. I think the delays of an official Froyo release from Sammy, especially after my conversion to Android from the i3G, as made me bitter inside. Side note, I may have inadvertently voted down your comment instead of up... If so, my bad.
King AntoniusNov 9th 2010 2:07PM
Just a little note, but this should be working on new iOS devices sometime soon as well. For this to work requires a bootrom exploit which has been unavailable for iPhone3GS and later, but I just read that a new bootrom that works on all iOS devices capable of running iOS4 has been confirmed so I'm guessing we will see it available in a couple months.

PashaNov 9th 2010 3:26PM
Well, it appears that there's some attempt to get this onto the 3GS, at least according to this http://www.idroidproject.org/wiki/Status
I hope that it happens.
cookiebitsNov 9th 2010 5:10PM
That's pretty cool. I wonder if this will work on my old iPod Touch 1G…
MikeNov 9th 2010 5:23PM
Just installed on my iphone 3g, and it is dialing out but not ringing or any type of notifcation when someone calls.
josephshenoyNov 9th 2010 9:08PM
good but some minor bugs are available
johanNov 19th 2010 11:46AM
does it work on an iPod Touch 2G iOS 4.1 ?
