Microsoft Security Essentials now offered via Windows Update
We're big fans of Microsoft Security Essentials -- it's lightweight, free, and offers malware protection that's every bit as good as (if not better than) more recognized names like Norton and McAfee (quit giggling, DS regulars...). Today, Microsoft has begun offering Security Essentials as an optional install via Windows Update.
Like Live Essentials and the Windows 7 Language Packs, users can now opt-in to load MSE on their Windows system. The update notification beckons small office users as well, offering a reminder that Security Essentials is free for them to use, too -- as long as they have 10 systems or fewer.

Fail, Microsoft has been offering Live Essentials as an Update since it released.

um yes but we are talking about Security Essentials, not Live Essentials.
this is definitely a very good thing. maybe now more people will see how easy installing security software and maintaining their computer can be. its really not hard to avoid viruses especially with a program as effective and easy to use as MSE.

Problem is that people buys computer from retailers such as Dell and HP which usually comes pre-loaded with McAfee or Norton. After a year or so, it expires, and users see that and thinks they have NO choice. It's great for peoples who reads Download Squad, we usually know about MSE. But, not the general public.
My main question however, will it prompt to install MSE if the user already have another anti-virus? What if the general user see that and thinks: "Wow that's great! I'll install that." and already have another anti-virus? Major conflict usually no?

Umm. I've been getting my Security Essential updates show up on my Windows update for a while now. I don't normally, since SE updates so regularly, but still.

They aren't talking about updates, they are talking about offering the full program via Microsoft Update (as in install the software from scratch, not update it).

Not offered yet on a single one of my 3,000 client PCs, all spread out across the U.S.A.
Guess it will be a slow roll out.

It always bothered me that Silverlight kept showing up in optional installs even though I would check "don't ever show again".

the definitions are also available through Windows Update, I update the definitions for MSE using Windows Update
MSE updating the definitions on its own turns into a resource hog, Windows Update keeps it plain and simple to update MSE's definitions without chewing up resources
