VLC now available for iPhone, iPod touch
Last month, VLC made the jump from desktop to iPad -- and now the app has gone universal. iPhone and iPod touch users can now download the popular player from the App Store.9to5 Mac has gone hands-on already, and the experience looks very smooth -- at least with their sub-5 minute test videos. We're curious to see how it handles larger files and high-def content.
We'll have our own hands-on report later in the day, but let us know your initial thoughts in the comments.

I wonder if its as useless as the iPad version? Seriously, I was so disappointed in the iPad version, as it never is able to play any avi/mkv/mpeg/etc file I throw at it. And I'm mad to see that they haven't updated the engine yet to fix the various issues.
I found OPlayerHD Lite and it beats the pants off of VLC.

On another subject, what's with the ad that pops up when I scroll down to a certain point on the Download Squad page? It doesn't allow backing up to reload your page.
Bad design.

I can see using this as a way to view video files I've saved to Dropbox without having to convert with iFunia video converter and sync through iTunes. Certainly a time saver. Are there other advantages I'm missing? Other than flash vids, I'm not really experiencing any situations where I can't view videos on my iPhone 3GS.

Unfortunately, you can't use Dropbox or anything like that to play with VLC. The way this app works is you have to transfer your movie files to your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch through iTunes' App File Sharing. This sucks because then all the files are taking up space on your limited flash drive. I wish we could copy and paste a URL into VLC and it then streams the video. Makes much more sense and is much more useful. Big time meh for this app
