Is FaceTime a serious security threat? Only if you're completely oblivious ...

Could FaceTime for Mac make it really easy for someone to steal your Apple ID?German Mac site MacNotes.de thinks so, calling FaceTime "a serious threat" to your Apple account. See, once you're logged into FaceTime, you can view your account info, which includes date of birth, security question and security answer. This info could obviously be used by someone malicious to gain access to your AppleID and run up a bunch of bogus App Store charges.

But, calling that "a serious threat?" You'd have to be pretty oblivious to let a thief gain physical access to your machine while you happen to be logged into FaceTime. And your Apple ID is hardly the only juicy target for a thief who's stolen your laptop. Autofilled credit card numbers, social security numbers, sensitive documents ... if your computer is stolen and you haven't taken steps to protect these, you've got more serious things to worry about than your Apple ID.

Should Apple keep this account info on the Web, password-protected, as it has done up until this point? Probably so. Does having it in FaceTime add up to a serious threat? I don't think so.
