Murder Map illustrates every known murder in London, England

There's no doubt that murder is one of mankind's most belligerent acts. But have you ever wondered how many homicides take place in a city? Or whether there's any pattern to their locations? The team behind Murder Map had those exact thoughts.
To answer these questions and more, they took it upon themselves to map every single murder and manslaughter that has ever been recorded in the historic city of London onto a Google Map. From the notorious crimes of Jack the Ripper, to present day knife crime, all of the heinous acts are there, each represented by a color-coded pin. Be it by knife, gun, ligature, poison, vehicle, bomb, blunt force or something else -- thanks to the hard work and thousands of hours of spent documenting the crimes by crime reporters in the Old Bailey, they're all listed.
Constantly updated as new convictions are found, Murder Map is intended as a freely available resource to inspire discussion, provide greater insight and influence social policy, as the 'world's first comprehensive picture of homicide in a modern city.' Whatever your view on murder is, it's incredibly interesting to be able to drill down on an area, click on murder locations and get the back story of what happened, how and who the unfortunate victim was, through detailed records. Perhaps not something for the faint of heart, but if you're bored at work, or want something interesting to read this weekend, check out Murder Map and see what life in London Town is really like.

But why so many murders with guns? I thought guns were illegal in the England, and that criminals respect those laws.
Samuel GibbsOct 17th 2010 2:23PM
Criminals, by their very nature, don't respect the law. If you're going to break the law to kill someone, why stop at breaking the law to get a gun?

Just a hunch, but you might want to get your sarcasm detector re-calibrated.
