Limera1n brings jailbreaking to iOS 4.1, divides jailbreak community
The iPhone jailbreaking community is all fired up about limera1n, a new jailbreak for iPhones and iPod Touches running iOS 4.1. Limera1n works, but our pals at Engadget are reporting that it appears to be a quick, buggy release by notorious jailbreaker Geohot, upstaging the even more notorious iPhone Dev Team. The jailbreaking community is divided on this hasty exploit, because it's forcing the iPhone Dev Team to delay a release, lest Apple kill Geohot's limera1n and the Dev Team's upcoming release with one software update. Meanwhile, greenpois0n, an earlier hack from another group called Chronic Dev Team, will start using limera1n's code.
If you've previously unlocked your iPhone using the Dev Team's ultrasn0w, limera1n may re-lock it. Even if this is your first jailbreak, you'll want to proceed with caution when using limera1n. Engadget found that the icons for some stock Apple apps were missing after the jailbreak.

I fail to see what's special about limera1n. I jailbreaked my iPhone 4.1 just a week ago with sn0wbreeze. So what's up with limera1n?

your phone was previously jailbroken.
limera1n allows you to jailbreak previously virgin os4.1, ipod3g and ipad1

I'm tired of the blatant ignorance by people and editors. Apple cannot get rid of the limera1n jailbreak with a software update. How many times does it have to be reiterated? The exploit is hardware based, not software. The current device you own can be jailbroken for the life of the device regardless of software updates. The jailbreak can only be patched with a hardware revision...which will come in the next gen devices. Then most likely greenpois0n will be released then. People...and editors...please read up before you give false information to others.

You're right, the bootrom exploit limera1n uses can only be patched in new hardware. It can, however, be made useless, as there are no tools currently available to perform a tethered jailbreak using this bootrom exploit without using comex's userland exploit. Sure, they will release another tool, but how long will that take? It was already quite a wait for a 4.1 jailbreak on these devices. It also won't be a wait till the next generation of devices...they'll put a new bootrom out, just like they did with the 3GS, so that one day newly purchased devices just won't work this way.
Besides, the article was right. Limera1n's jailbreak can be removed by one Apple update. Limera1n is the tool, not the exploit, and this tool uses two exploits.
Don't listen to the haters, Jay.

The jailbreak will be tethered after a software update as comex's userland jailbreak allows the limera1n jailbreak to be untethered, you need to ensure your SHSH files are backed up so that once Apple release an update you can restore back to 4.1.
