HeyWire for iOS sends international text messages for free
One app I've been trying to find for my iPod touch for quite some time is a free SMS app -- and one that actually works. I've tried a couple before, but with no success. Maybe because I'm in Canada. Maybe because I was missing something. Either way, I was still without a way to send text messages to my contacts.
Thanks to HeyWire, however, my SMS prayers have been answered! The app works beautifully: register, get yourself a U.S. based phone number for texting purposes, and start messaging your friends. That's about all there is to it. You can even upload your iOS contacts to make communication easier.
Bonus: Facebook chat is also supported, though I'll stick with a good multi-protocol IM app for handling my Facebook communications for now. HeyWire is pretty darn slick, though, so if they add the other networks I need like GTalk, Windows Live, and AIM I can certainly see myself making the switch.
A brief reminder: go to your HeyWire settings and clear the signature, otherwise you'll be sending a promotional message with every text.

useless. email is international and free. every mobile phone operator accepts plaintext emails and converts them to sms. just send to @ (ex: 1-555-555-5555@vtext.com for verizon)
country code is 1 for united states

Perhaps in the US, but not outside. Email to SMS is generally not available in the UK for instance.
