Windows Live Essentials 2011 available for download today
Microsoft's updated set of Windows Live apps is due out later today. According to several sites, the release should come at around 10AM PST.
Live Essentials 2011 includes an assortment of programs like Windows Live Mail, Messenger, Photo Gallery, and the re-re-named Windows LiveMesh Sync Mesh. The new apps are a big improvement -- Messenger has received loads of praise for its social networking integration, Mesh has bumped its sync storage up to 5GB, and I'm really enjoying Live Mail for ad-free desktop access to my Hotmail account.
We'll let you know when the Windows Live Essentials 2011 download link goes live, including offline installer links as soon as they've been discovered.

I have tried messenger in the beta, it looks nice (WinMo 7 style) but they have added loads more of ads. Every conversation window now has ads at the bottom (that you have to disable somewhere hidden in the options).
The rest of the programs I have tested all crashed with 10 seconds of booting, so I threw the complete package away and went back to the previous one...

makes no difference to the common user.

The "common user" would certainly appreciate windows movie maker and windows photo gallery, why wouldn't they NOT want it? It is one of the best freeware out there. Have you even tried movie maker?

I find it hard to believe that ANYONE still uses a single-client IM app. Why would you want to limit yourself to the contacts you can chat with, or run multiple programs for chat?
As for Live Mesh, I really enjoyed it until Dropbox added an iPhone app.

Personally, I like the official IM apps because they are fully compatible with all of the features offered by their respective services. Multi-IM clients are a nice idea, but I've too many bad experiences with them to want to continue using them.

I agree completely with Anthony. That's why I stay away from multiclient apps.
Now, if you are JUST interested in a 2 way chat with you and a buddy, then a multichat app is great - or using a cellphone or other mobile device (like a slate)....but for the computer or laptop user, the full official clients are what I use.
