Xmarks bookmark syncing service calls it quits
Bookmark syncing service Xmarks has decided to shut down. It's sad news, but hardly surprising. When Xmarks launched -- originally on Firefox as Foxmarks -- it was a novel, awesome idea. Syncing your bookmarks across browsers on different machines is extraordinarily useful. It's so useful, in fact, that Chrome and Firefox both have their own bookmark syncing implementations now and that doesn't leave much room for Xmarks. Talk of going to a "freemium" model was scrapped because Xmarks didn't want to ask people to pay for something that browsers are now providing as a standard feature.
What does this mean for current Xmarks users? Well, you'll still get to use the service for 90+ days -- I have no idea how long the plus will be -- before it shuts down for good. After that, consider Firefox or Chrome bookmark syncing, or check out the list of sync alternatives that Xmarks has posted. They mention the built-in syncing services for each browser, but they also put in a good word for Evernote and SugarSync.

OK, I am sorry to everyone who uses XMarks as this shutdown is clearly my fault as I started using the service on Sunday.
Again, apologises ;)

I hope some company or someone will take over xmarks. This is by far for me the best cross-platform bookmark manager/sync-er.

I am going to miss this amazing tool. Helped me a great deal in my daily work. Here are my thoughts on this and the worthy alternatives to this tool I could find -

Hey Mozilla, grab it before its gone. Then integrate it with Places and allow people to optionally share individual bookmarks or bookmarks in certain folders and/or with certain tags. This way we will have both the encrypted content of Sync and the unintentionally user generated votes from tags. This will be a big addition to Sync by having a suggestion feature to similar bookmarks.

I must admit I'm really sad about this. I used it to sync bookmarks across 3 different computers, two different operating systems, 4 different browsers and two iOS devices. I would have paid for it to be honest.
Now I've got to trawl around and see if I can figure out a system to replicate what Xmarks could do. Not hopeful at the moment, it's certainly not obvious.
