Jajah is an incredible phone-to-phone VoIP service
I think we last covered Jajah around 2007. The very fact that it's now 2010 and the service is still going strong is a testament to its power.
The premise is simple: phone-to-phone, via the Web. You go to the Jajah site (on your computer or through your phone's Web connection), punch in the number you want to dial, and your phone starts ringing.
You pick up your phone (landline or cell), and then the other side starts ringing. They pick up, and you talk.
There are a number of key advantages here:
- Since it's phone-to-phone, I don't need a high-speed Web connection. Sometimes I'm at a coffee shop or someplace with a crappy connection that wouldn't carry Skype or Google Voice. With Jajah, it's a non-issue.
- Since it's phone-to-phone, I'm completely mobile. I can use my cell phone and just go outside; I'm not tethered to my computer.
- It works with my aging Nokia device; I don't need a newfangled iPhone to use it.
- It gives me a direct number for each of the contacts I have. I can simply dial a local number in my own country, and the contact's phone starts ringing (even if it's in the US or Taiwan).
- The rates are very competitive. I use it instead of SkypeOut quite often.
- They can bill you in more currencies than Skype can, which is good for international users.
What I like about it is that it doesn't try to replace Skype. It is its own thing, in its own niche, and it just works. It's very, very handy.

I was going to say that Google Voice does this as well but looks like earls was faster.

I have always liked Jajah, even though its been a while since i've used it. Great customer support. Glad they are still kicking around! They have a lot of competition from Skype, and especially Google, I wonder whats in the works?
Jajah, any hints?

I'm confused. It says the call is phone-to-phone and you don't need a high-speed connection, but there's no carrier charges? How is this different from standard VOIP?

Thank you for the great post :) JAJAH is pretty awesome. We have been around for a few years now so we know what we are doing and have the network to support us. With JAJAH you get a local number assigned to your international destination number. So you dont have to be near your computer when you make your call. It works on any phone - smart or not. You can read more about our products on www.jajah.com/products/

I have been using them for years. The fact that I can assign a US number to my European family members phones is the best feature. While at home I have unlimited Vonage, on the road, on vacation, etc I use Jajah and it works great. The price have gone a bit higher since I started using them, but it is convenient...

I use Rebtel, they operate in the same effortless way and have way better rates for my destinations.

@Matt Phone to Phone Calling should basically work, even when you have no computer or any internet connection. Thats the beauty of it. For skype you will always need internet.
There is another kewl service: www.miglu.com
They use a different approach to phone to phone calls, but it works from anywhere in the world unlike rebtel and jajah which may not work from many countries where local numbers are illegal.
Hope that clears your doubt
Cheers
