Firefox 4 Beta 5 released: hardware acceleration turned on by default, HTML 5 audio, and more
Last night, Firefox 4 Beta 5 was officially released. Nightly builds have now moved on to beta 6.We've actually covered the two main additions in beta 5 already: hardware acceleration (check my three-way browser showdown!) and the new HTML5 Audio Data API. Apparently, the Firefox button (yes, that ugly orange thing) now has a new look on Windows Vista and 7, but I can't see much of a difference (and according to some commenters, the CSS hack to move or remove the button also no longer works).
There's also the inclusion of a new feature called HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS), which allows websites to force SSL-encrypted connections.
Grab a copy, or read the full release notes for more information. (There's a ton of new features in Firefox 4!)

The hack to change the button color works. The rest doesn't. And it's really annoying when I see all that wasted space on the top of my FF window.

Yeah, so I can see. I'm going to find out if there's a new way to move it... there must be!
GamerOfFreedomSep 8th 2010 7:03AM
Yes the must be!

I guess I don't mind that button that much, however I would hope that by the RC they allow us to move it (via toolbars->customize) just like every other button.

is it just me or are the fonts kind of messed up in this build? small sizes seem to be bold now. Also the margins/padding of some divs with text in them are different too.

Haven't checked out build 5 yet but in build 4 there are definitely some font issues - I've noticed weird coloring and bad anti-aliasing (on webpages, not interface). Though it doesn't happen everywhere.

same here but only since beta 5
maybe because of directwrite the antialiasing is bad or needs tweaking?

Most of Downloadsquad readers will greatly appreciate your contribution. I know I will.

I don“t understand why Mozilla is not using that wasted space.

I really wanted to switch back to firefox with this new release, but i can't stand that button...maybe it's personal, for me its booth ugly and a waste of space.

After installing 4.0b5 i noticed that the Add A New Tab button is moved all the way to the right (right next to the panorama button) and is not right after the last opened tab. After opening enough tabs to fill out my url bar the Add A New Tab button suddenly went in a position that was right after the last opened tab. That effect lasted until i closed Firefox, after what the Add A New Tab button was again at the far right. Is this how it suppose to work or is it a bug ? Since i would do anything to have the Add A New Tab button right after my last opened tab is there a way to make it stay right after the last opened tab or ill have to wait for a another version ?

This definitely seems like a bug, you should submit a report.

Is it just me, or is this build REALLY SLOW?
Sebastian AnthonySep 8th 2010 9:47AM
It feels slow to me, too. I've emailed Mozilla to see if there's something wrong...

not happy. why is hardware acceleration only for windows??

Hey, here is a CSS hack that's compatible with beta 5: http://rainmeter.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=4670&p=35488#p35488

Wahoo! I'll try it out, and write about it tomorrow.
