Designers think iTunes 10 logo "sucks", Steve Jobs responds
In my post introducing iTunes 10, I mentioned that the new iTunes logo was sure to be controversial. Looks like I got that right! Wired News is reporting that a designer emailed Steve Jobs to tell him that the new logo "sucks" and throws away a decade of "instant product recognition." The designer, Josh Kopac, got one of Steve's trademark terse responses: "We disagree." A lot of people in the design community agree with Kopac that the iTunes 10 logo has got to go. Check out Dribbble, the playground where lots of pro designers preview their new work, and you'll find several replacement iTunes 10 icons already. One that seems to have gained real traction is a magenta version by Chris Carlozzi. It's got 154 likes on Dribbble, and has been touted by other blogs as the icon iTunes 10 should have had.
If you don't love the new logo, take your pick of icons from Dribbble, or show us some other alternatives you like better. If you think the new logo's just fine, here's your chance to offer a defense in the comments.

The best part of this is not using iTunes and not giving a shit, and watching all the users argue about the icon.

As one who's job revolves around aesthetics (I'm a photographer who also has a solid interest in design) I have to say that it struck me like a brick in the face when I saw the new logo how bad it was. It really does look like a retrograde step. I don't mind the reasoning about losing the cd but the replacement strikes me as truly ugly design. I googled "Itunes logo sucks" and sure enough there were a slew of articles about it. Seems I'm not alone in thinking it's remarkably awful. Does it matter much? Not a lot. Not compared to a lot of other things in the world but it's strikingly bad and bad enough that I'll be changing mine because I don't want to see that every day. Apple, for a company who's design is usually reasonably good, I'm surprised at this choice. While on the subject of critiquing Apple design choices, can they provide some control over the number of, and spacing of, icons on the homescreen. That really does look clumsy and is bad enough to put me off purchasing an iPad.

it's not about difference. New icon is too simple and there isn't any special meaning in it. It's just too bad for Apple.
I've never thought that i could say it for Apple but.. Some new lines are disturbing and the designer wasn't brave enough about choosing the colors. I don't know anything about it but it looks like they changed their designer. The design isn't a progress at all and i can easily say that the new design can't even be compared to old one. (at least for a windows users.)

It is generic crap. Looks like something made on a freeware 3d object/type program you'd use to pimp out your geocities page 10 years ago.
