Designers think iTunes 10 logo "sucks", Steve Jobs responds
In my post introducing iTunes 10, I mentioned that the new iTunes logo was sure to be controversial. Looks like I got that right! Wired News is reporting that a designer emailed Steve Jobs to tell him that the new logo "sucks" and throws away a decade of "instant product recognition." The designer, Josh Kopac, got one of Steve's trademark terse responses: "We disagree." A lot of people in the design community agree with Kopac that the iTunes 10 logo has got to go. Check out Dribbble, the playground where lots of pro designers preview their new work, and you'll find several replacement iTunes 10 icons already. One that seems to have gained real traction is a magenta version by Chris Carlozzi. It's got 154 likes on Dribbble, and has been touted by other blogs as the icon iTunes 10 should have had.
If you don't love the new logo, take your pick of icons from Dribbble, or show us some other alternatives you like better. If you think the new logo's just fine, here's your chance to offer a defense in the comments.

Personally, I think the icon is fine. Sounds to me like a bunch of people just complaining because something is different. As an end user I just wish they'd make the whole thing run faster on Windows....

The old icon with the CD as the focal point didn't make any sense anymore, in that regard the old one is definitely an improvement. But iTunes has progressed to being so much more than a music app, retaining the music branding makes just as little sense.
The new icon is eminently better than any of the ones on dribble though. an icon has to be distinctive and simple. the ones on dribble are pretty, but when shrunk down, greyscaled, or viewed from a distance they lose all their appeal.

I definitely agree.
I've gotten use to the design and looks equally attractive in the Win7 taskbar.
Now... if only they can fix the pinning to taskbar issue I've been having--
It shows up as two icons now....
DuffinSep 7th 2010 8:11AM
I had that issue as well, octoberasian. All you have to do is start the program and pin that one to your taskbar. Not sure why, but if you pin the inactive icon, then yes, you'll get two appearing on the taskbar.

Don't people have anything better to worry about? It's an icon. It's fine. Although I instantly recognised the old iTunes logo, I also found that I instantly recognised the new one within about 5 seconds of installing iTunes 10. Because, you know... the old one wasn't there any more.
The fact that it's still called iTunes despite providing music, video, apps etc is a much bigger talking point than the icon. But even that really isn't worth talking about. To paraphrase Mr Jobs : It's not that big of a deal.

Wow. People are still living in the '90's? Icons? Folks are spending time on icons? Wow. SO funny.
Talk about a who cares event. An iTunes icon.

I hate the new icon. The first thing I noticed in it was the background, and I actually didn't see the note until I looked closer. This continue to happen all the time I happen to see the damn thing, and when an icon highlights the background instead of the object on it something is clearly wrong.
I expected more from Apple. It seems that they grew too attached to it and missed the fact that the background is too overwhelming, which probably is why everyone hates it. For a company that takes pride in their design this seems like a lame mistake to make.

Yes, I am a designer, and no I don't particularly care for the logo, but then again I don't particularly care one way or the other. I've got my own designs to worry about without critiquing Apple's - it's not like they'd actually change it anyway. The Internet always freaks out whenever someone big changes something - see: Facebook, YouTube, et cetera - and this is an extremely minor change overall. They'll continue using the program because that's where their content is, and eventually, they'll get used to it, setting themselves up to complain about the next change.
I get around the controversy by simply not using iTunes. foobar2000, all the way.

There are a lot of people defending this new icon because the CD was dated in the old icon, that's true. Others are say people hate the new one simply because it's new and not recognizable, but that's got about zero to do with it-new, more appropriate logos happen all the time. I have no problem with the strategy behind the change (online music sales growth, iTunes expanding..) it's the execution that is ham-fisted. This really looks like a Microsoft icon from the mid-90's, something created by someone more adept at writing code then designing logos, and it's simply not exemplary of the forward-thinking, progressive company that Apple strives to be.
Also interesting how many people, who have taken the time to comment, are saying this is a non-issue and that icons don't matter. Tell Nike that icons don't matter and if it's not worthy of the hand-wringing why take the time to comment?

I am surprised Jobs did not tell people they are looking at it wrong.
StamosSep 6th 2010 6:25PM
Nope, they've got it wrong. The iTunes logo doesn't suck, iTunes itself SUCKS. Actually, I guess they're half-right. The new logo looks pretty generic. Still, it's got nothing on the suckiness of iTunes itself.
QuinnSep 6th 2010 6:53PM
I vote for this one. By far the best on dribble, and stays consistent with Apple's color "flurry" look.

Everybody's got an opinion, as someone who's never owned an iPod or used iTunes I don't see anything wrong with it. It's an icon, I probably wouldn't frame it but I don't think it "sucks" either.
caleb.largoSep 6th 2010 8:06PM
yeah that logo really sucks. i'm a graphic designer, and i know a good logo when i see one! the purple one on dribbble is really sweet!
finding.zen89Sep 6th 2010 10:41PM
Their new Icon sucks. I updated from version 9 to 10 and then saw that ugly blue icon on my desktop....It couldn't definitely use a "remix" from one of the other icons at Dribbble.
Apple, what were you thinking?
DuffinSep 7th 2010 8:12AM
Can someone please explain why it matters if the iTunes logo is recognizable? It's not like you go into a department store and pick up a copy of iTunes as opposed to it's competitor because you recognize the logo. If you're going to get iTunes, you're getting it no matter what the logo looks like. Usually recognizability matters in regards to physical items, not a computer program, or in items with multiple competitors, so why does it even matter?
And, in my personal opinion, I like the new logo better than the old one. I've always hated the old iTunes logo. It was ugly and the colors were washed out and bland just like actual iTunes. Now if only they'd update the iTunes UI...

For being a bunch of "designers" I think it's funny that most of the icons on dribbble look like a modified version of the new icon. Don't complain if you can't do any better than adding gloss, changing the background, or making the edge thicker.

Ironically, this logo looks like it could be a button for Windows Media Player 11
