Intel buys McAfee for nearly $8 billion

While most of the IT guys I know aren't fans of McAfee -- especially after that teensy little definition screwup which resulted in thousands of unwanted desktop support hours -- Intel is obviously a fan. In a press release this morning, the IT behemoth has announced that they're swallowing up McAfee for the princely sum of $7.7 billion dollars.
Whether guys like you or I like it or not, McAfee still has a lot going for it. It's preinstalled on loads of OEM PCs and gets plenty of subscription buys as a result. It's a force to be reckoned with in the enterprise, and they're one of the most widely-recognized names in antivirus.
Maybe this is a bad time to point out that McAffee 2010 posted the worst repair mark out of the 19 apps tested by AV-Test labs this quarter... Heck, it didn't even manage the 12 points required for certification.

I hope this can save McAfee's products. They have had a lot of problems that have dimmed the company's reputation. I don't remember coming across anybody with McAfee in the university recently.

Thanks, Z! Where else can you get the Intel/McAfee headline AND an insipid meme cartoon in the same place?
Nowhere! :)

Is the new Intel Celeron chip going to delete crucial Windows system files?

Now that makes sense. Intel builds the CPUs and McAfee uses them to full capacity... :)
Are we going to see hardware acceleration for antivirus software soon?

hey downloadsquad. more of this kinda tech news would be appreciated, although a little business analysis would also not be amiss

Personally I wish McAfee and Norton and Symantec would all go away. They make the worst programs ever. Microsoft Security Essentials rules the AV world!!!

as I said on Engadget...(are you guys the same guys when you give us the same news?) ...
it's about time a "CPU" wants to be the internal 'cloud' (hear: nebulous) watch dog of the unit (any, really?) it controls.
Hm,hm... let me think, can I think, do I hear monopoly or I-am-your-friend from my CPU company? Maybe I should change... but wait, the other CPU company doesn't have a built-in anti-virus... No, that's impossible, they must have swallowed Norton, or ESET or Avast! or AVG.... this is a sweet nightmare or possibly a dangerous vivid dream.
