Apple borrows name from Google, opens Safari Extensions Gallery
If you're using Safari 5 and have been waiting patiently for an official source for browser extensions, your prayers have been answered! Yes, the Google Chrome Safari Extensions Gallery is now online!
Right now, there are about one hundred extensions listed and they're grouped by category. Most of the big-name extensions you'd be looking for are there -- like AdBlock, LastPass, Instapaper, and WOT. The Exposer extension is definitely worth a look -- it provides slick, Expose-style thumbnail previews of your Safari tabs.
But come on, Apple... Really? You had to name your web-based "shop" for Safari Extensions the Gallery? Maybe they're hoping for some SEO win.

Ha, that's "Open Source" ideology at work

Borrows the name from Google, and the idea from Mozilla...

Are my eyes deceiving me, or is the very second item listed a bing extension?
JoshJul 28th 2010 11:43AM
Bing is also available as a search in Safari Mobile, you know. And Safari 5, I think.

Shop? Are Apple charging for these extensions then?
There are only so many words they could have used. Showcase - they're borrowing from Adobe. Library - they're borrowing from Microsoft. Besides, what's wrong with a bit of consistency for consumers?
@216 If it wasn't for Apple's "Open Source Ideology" there wouldn't be a Google Chrome Extensions gallery. Pipe down and enjoy the web, regardless of your browser choice.

I guess there's only so many things you can call this type of thing. They could have called it Extensions for Safari, but I think Safari Extensions Gallery sounds better.

Is the name really that big of a deal? I mean... Apple finally brings a good method of doing Extensions to Safari and DLS's post about it talks more about the name than the actual service. I expect more from DLS than that.

To be fair, Josh, I wrote about extension support when they _actually_ brought it in v5 and even posted a tutorial on enabling it when it first arrived.
Also, your avatar is pure win -- but please don't feel the need to change it to Modano when he signs next week. ;)

That's fair enough. I don't remember that post, to be honest. I've been reading this blog for probably four or five years now. Hard to remember every post. lol
And don't worry, I won't be changing it. It's been Franzen since the 08 Finals and it will remain The Mule (likely) until Zetterberg is named captain next season or the one after.

ah crap, it should be iExtensions store. If only FF & Chrome hadn't established a culture of encouraging all these add-ons to be free, Apple could have made big bucks off their store. But no ... those other browsers had to go and ruin everything.

App Store?
Marketplace?
Copying and tweaking names is nothing new.
