How to enable side tabs in Google Chrome

While they've been available in Chromium (and Chromium OS) for quite some time, side tabs only made the jump to Google Chrome in yesterday's update. If you've got a nice, big widescreen monitor on your desktop and you want to shift your tabs from the top to the left edge of your browser, here's how to do it.
Like so many new Chrome features, side tabs are hidden behind a command line flag: --enable-vertical-tabs. As always, if you need help figuring out how to add a flag, have a look at our how-to post! Once you've done that, simply right slick on your tab bar and choose use side tabs.
App tabs and pinned tabs appear at the top of the list and you can still drag and drop to re-order tabs and right-click them to pin, close, duplicate, or reload. As Martin points out over at Ghacks, there's some graphical weirdness when you first activate the switch. Give Chrome a slap by opening a new tab with ctrl+t or simply minimize and restore the window.
Remember, you need to download and install either the Google Chrome dev channel build or a recent Chromium snapshot.

Now, can we make that sidebar automatically hide? Thanks!

Wow! I've been waiting for this for a long time. Going to upgrade from stable to dev now...
Thanks DLS!

Mine doesn't fully maximize, there's about a 1/8" on the far right hand side that I can still see the desktop.
Plus it removes the Windows Min/Max/Restore & Close buttons.
I'm also missing the "+ New Tab". Not that big of an issue, I usually just use alt+enter when creating a new tab anyways.
But then again, I'm only using the Beta channel, not the Dev channel.

Actually today, the 1/8" of the desktop on the far right has disappeared. Perhaps the graphical weirdness should include turn on Chrome, turn it off, turn it back on.

is it possible to make this happen on a mac?

In Terminal:
open /Applications/Browsers/Chromium/Chromium.app --args --enable-vertical-tabs
Where “ /Applications/Browsers/Chromium/Chromium.app” is the path to your app. You can drag the app after open and the path will be filled in.
I’d like the tabs on the right … Any ideas?
Vertical tabs are not remembered after an app restart.
Thanks ... Ken

thanks, ken
i'm not understanding your second sentence about dragging the app. by app i assume you're referring to chrome, but drag it from where to where? from app folder to ....?
and are you saying that this process must be repeated with every browser start, and that the vertical tabs default to the left side? i would prefer the right too, and having to go through this process each time would make it not worthwhile for me.

With the dev channel I see +New Tab and min/maz buttons. But a ctrl-click open (new tab) is opening above the current tab on the side, not below, which is a little unexpected and annoying...

Now if they'd just add nesting I'd be willing to try dropping Firefox. Tree-Style Tabs is about the only Firefox add-on I'd really have trouble going without now.

Is there anyway to put the Tab Bar at BOTTOM?
