Porn sites will finally get .XXX domain, says ICANN
ICANN, the organization that controls top-level domain names, is reportedly ready to approve the controversial .XXX domain, intended for use by porn sites. It's an interesting decision that comes after years of debate. Both porn businesses and anti-porn crusaders have opposed .XXX. On the porn end of things, there are worries that it will segregate adult sites and ruin their SEO. On the anti-porn side, people are uncomfortable with any official acknowledgement of sexually explicit content online [this, of course, despite the fact that you and I both know the Internet's primary purpose is the delivery of porn -Ed].
You know who's REALLY excited about .XXX, though? The registries who will be selling the new domain names. ICM Registry has published an enthusiastic blog post about ICANN's decision, and it's just dripping with excitement at their upcoming profits. Part of the sales challenge will be getting sites to opt in to .XXX, though. There's no indication that the new domain will ever be mandatory for adult sites, so it's really down to which domain makes the most business sense for each porn provider.
Where do you stand on the .XXX, domain Download Squad readers?

I say
since they already exist
what's the difference if they have their special domain?
it will make filtering easier anyways
MSaherJun 25th 2010 4:34PM
the same thought I got, it make filtering them out much easier so I don't think the porn industry will support such a move

The Net is buried in porn and any kid can easily find it. A society that does not protect the innocence of its children is courting social catastrophe. People need to wake up and do something before the damage is totally obvious. Kids are emotionally damaged by porn and anybody who thinks freedom of speech is permission to let this continue is blind to the reality of what is clearly taking place.

It's my personal belief that children (American ones, anyway) are "damaged" by porn because it's sexually-explicit material in a society that largely shuns sex and any kind of sexual discussion as a simple matter of prudishness.
American parents seriously need to just open themselves up to the discussion of these things they find uncomfortable, because they DO need to be discussed. Pushing the topic off until they're adults, avoiding it entirely, or leaving it at nothing more than "wait until you're married" is obviously not doing the job.
Do it for the children.

I find myself indifferent. Since it is not mandatory, the only purpose I can see is to make the registries selling the new names a few bucks, just as you stated in the article.
Since I don't own a registry, big yawn. It is like telling us the sun will come up tomorrow. Only not as important.

It should have been done this way from the beginning. It makes filtering easier for both those who want porn and those who want to avoid it. For example, breasts.com can have medical information, and breasts.xxx can have lascivious pictures of boobies. Seems like win-win to me. I would hope that vox populi alone could drive almost all of the porn sites to .xxx,

When is this going to be available?
SamuelJun 25th 2010 3:18PM
I think this is all a little bit too late. Maybe if when porn sites first starting buying domains they were required to stay in a .xxx top level it would be effective, but they're going to have a hell of a time getting people to switch now. The intent makes sense, as it would be easier for people who are offended by porn to block it, but where would it really end? The same argument for porn could be used to create a top level domain for hate groups or gay websites. People are offended by all sorts of things, and I don't think they're going to get the results they're hoping for with .xxx

I wish that they would make this mandatory for all porn sites. I see it as a win win win. A win for the person wants to find porn because they would just have to search for the .xxx sites so the porn site. A win for the porn site as their customers will know how to find them so they will get the business they seek. And a win for the rest of us who do not want that junk can avoid any .xxx site and/or block all .xxx sites.

don't forget to vote on the OpenDNS addition here:

That's a great idea, especially considering that we are really running out of usable domain names. If the porn websites all use .XXX domain names, this will free up great domain names, such as cum-whores-get-it-anally.com, for other, non-porno, American enterprises... errrrrm, no, wait.

wait for church groups to buy up all the xxx sites and place a million popups of pictures of Jesus looking disapprovingly.
maandersonJun 25th 2010 7:56PM
It will make it much easier to filter out of my home.
betoJun 25th 2010 8:21PM
I think over all its a good idea. Easier for public and private sectors to filter out some sites and hopefully .xxx domains can be secure/verified porn sites where you would not get any spyware or viruses. As to the kids and protecting them just don't let them use the computers alone.

If sex.com sold for 13million and porn.com sold for 9.5 million, how much will the .xxx version sell for?
I am sure it will be snapped up quick! And they will only cost $10USD each
mobyJun 26th 2010 1:01AM
I always thought it a good idea frrom sheer simplicity. That said, there is no mandate that any porn company ONLY purchase the .xxx domains so there is no real improvement on filtering. Many already have multiple domains as it is so the fears of being summarily blocked are unfounded as well.
mairondilJun 26th 2010 1:36AM
I had a buddy that ran some porn sites and he told me they would prefer a .xxx domain name because they DON'T want minors to view their product.
FreezerJun 26th 2010 1:49PM
A good idea on paper. What incentive do the big porn sites have to switch to XXX domains? Are you going to legally force them? And then what's the line at what's "adult" and merely "mature?" Not to mention that a good chunk of the "known" domain names are going to be snapped up by cybersquattters and scumware merchants looking to plant their pop-up and malware laden flags on "porn.xxx" and the like.
This is going to be the biggest failure since pets.com.
