This is not new. Google Docs Viewer is supporting .doc and .docx files for long time. And, here is a browser add-on for Firefox & Chrome to open .doc,.pdf, .ppt, .docx files with Google Docs Viewer with two unique features: HTTPS / secured connection and full screen view:
