VLC 1.1 is here: hardware acceleration, WebM, extensions

So what's new in VLC 1.1? First and foremost, hardware acceleration has arrived for VLC users who run Windows Vista and Windows 7 or Linux. MKV HD support has been improved, and VLC 1.1 can now play VP-8 and MPEG-4 lossless videos. VLC 1.1 also sports a buffed-up Web plug-in which supports the WebM container and offers generally improved video streaming.
VLC 1.1's code has been optimized as well, yielding big performance gains (up to 40%, according to the official site). "Tens of thousands of lines of code [were] removed," states the VLC 1.1 news page.
Apart from improving VLC's ability to handle various media types, the biggest addition might just be the new add-ons and script framework. Yes, VLC is now extensible -- so expect to start seeing some awesome extensions in the coming days and weeks as developers begin tinkering.

"hardware acceleration has arrived for VLC users who run Windows Vista and Windows 7 or Linux."
Also requires and Nvidia graphic card at this point.

I have a ATI card, and I watched a 1080p MKV. The GPU load went from ~3% to ~30% when I was watching the movie. And my CPU usage was lower than with VLC 1.0.

source?

The source is VideoLAN themselves >_<
"Ready for HD
[...]
NB: so far, on Windows for GPU decoding, VideoLAN is recommending nVidia® GPU, until ATI® drivers are working with VLC architecture, and until the VLC developers get access to some Intel® hardware supporting GPU decoding."

I hope someone makes a VLC extension that allows you to download video with the same spec as FF's "Video DownloadHelper" or Internet Download Manager's video downloader.
That would make VLC even more amazing really

I'm actually pretty excited at taking a look at this when I get back from work. VLC really is a power horse and it has a hell of a lot of functions if you have a good look around.
Good to see that they are utilising hardware acceleration and that MKV HD is being better supported. Great stuff.

I wish someone would make a media center like extension for VLC, so it could keep track of you tv shows and movies.

Huh, if they keep this speed up it will take them about three months (give or take) longer to reach 2.0 than it took them to reach 1.0 (not counting pre-GPL era). Keep up the good work!

If someone doesn't get GPU acceleration with this VLC release, another great option is "splayer", which works really well and also has it (working with Nvidias and ATIs). And like VLC, has also a portable flavour :o)

Finally, the developers fixed the effing deinterlacing options problem.
Good job VLC, but I'd still use MPC.
Works as a backup and other recording things. :)

So... Any word on Mac users?
