Is it Facebook's fault that you're still using IE6 at work?
According to Microsoft's chief security advisor in Australia, some companies refuse to upgrade to the latest versions of Internet Explorer because keeping employees on IE6 keeps them off of Facebook. As you've probably noticed if you've tried to sign into any contemporary social networking sites on IE6 ... it doesn't exactly work. Facebook shows a message telling you to upgrade your browser, and some features won't work at all. Basically, IE6 is being used as a Facebook blocker.
Microsoft thinks you should upgrade your browser, too. The same security guy implied that keeping IE6 just to block Facebook is a total cop out when you could just talk to your employees about acceptable uses of company time, and then upgrade them to the faster, more secure IE8. I'll go ahead and say what Microsoft can't: this IE6 policy is asinine. I don't know who these companies are, but I feel terrible for anyone who has to work for them.

The very same business's that are using IE6 to stop people using Facebook are run by some very dumb IT as not able to edit a hosts file. I hope there systems get virus and because of that they go about business. LOL
facebook.com 127.0.0.1
fbcnd.net 127.0.0.1
Wow look how very complex that would be!

That's just lazy IT, try a firewall or proxy server.

They just need to blacklist Facebook.com from their own network

Speaking for "dumb IT".... Many things can be done, but when actually done, get thrown back in our face because simply just talking to your employees about acceptable uses of company time doesn't do squat unless company management actually follows through. Especially when a company has decided that it needs a Facebook web presence even though they then can't see it since they banned Facebook from the comp network.

Unfortunately it isn't as simple as dumb IT. We have several web based apps that do not work in IE7 or IE8. These will eventually be replaced with newer software but in the interim no one is going to pay to implement software changes just to satisfy Microsoft.

The upgrades are not to satisfy Microsoft. They're for your own protection.

@Ed - "These will eventually be replaced with newer software"
IE7 was released 3.5 years ago. What's your definition of "eventually?"
As Drew pointed out, if you aren't aware of the massive security improvement either browser is over IE6, then you get what you deserve.

The problem is Oracle Financials. A behemoth of a system which covers everything from payrole to invoices to holiday allocations.
Upgrading it is extremely complicated (as it hooks into almost every part of a companies workflow) and extremely expensive.
Most companies simply cannot justify the impacts (financially and operationally) of upgrading this to the latest version just so everyone can start using IE7 or IE8.

Well, as a user of Oracle at work, I find that dumb IT and Oracle go hand in hand.
AnthonyJun 2nd 2010 2:20AM
The problem lies in the fact that you are using Oracle, sir. If your company couldn't have been bothered to find better software that would not force you to diffuse a bomb every time you needed to upgrade, then your boss should be smacked around a bit with a rather large trout. Sticking with IE6 is just plain stupid!

Try all major Canadian banks.
Windows 2000 and IE6 is still in place in 95% of them.
And yes, dumb IT policies are to blame.

My former employer switched over to Firefox for all company computers years ago.

Just block the damn thing and fire anybody trying to access.
