Facebook privacy controls will be simplified, says Zuckerberg
Mark Zuckerberg took to the pages of the Washington Post today to address Facebook users' concerns over the site's complex and confusing privacy settings. Zuckerberg said he's heard what users are saying, and that Facebook will respond by introducing a simpler set of privacy controls in the coming weeks. He said Facebook wanted to give users granular control over settings, but "we just missed the mark."
There's no word yet on how much simpler the new "simple" settings will be, or when they'll roll out, but Zuck did the right thing by addressing users concerns, especially with Quit Facebook Day coming up on May 31st. Whatever the privacy settings look like later this summer, they're sure to be less confusing than the more than 170 different privacy choices Facebook users have to navigate now.

The gist of Zuckerberg's article is "We made the settings tweakable, but you're too stupid to use it so we dumbed it back down. You're welcome." Yet all along the REAL issue that made people angry was the opt-out instead of opt-in third party information sharing.

WTF?!
Facebook had granular controls to start off with, then they simplified it and in doing and removed pretty much all of the detailed setttings you used to have. So now they are just going to make it even worse??

Can you explain to me what granular means 'granular control' ? I've read it in a few tech articles and I don't understand how it applies. The only definition of granular I can find is 'having large or coarse grains or particles' and that doesn't seem to fit here.
Another article I read referred to an update of WebOS as a 'granular version.' (http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/29/webos-1-4-1-1-now-available-for-verizon-subscribers/)
I've tried different sources, but I am still perplexed as to how granular can apply in these situations. If you could help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

Granular means exactly that, like the description you gave, in this case, it means fine (or granular if you will) customisation options. i.e. you can change every minute detail of your privacy settings, rather than just having a simple allow or block option.
The Granular WebOS, i assume means you can set exactly what you want to be running or installed on your phone etc. Granular means broken down into lots of different parts.
Hope this helps. :)

Is it just me or is it weird that he went op-eding this instead of you know, communicating directly to the members he "serves"?
I hear from Facebook when anyone sneezes so why not actually mea culpa this directly to the user population?

I don't get it. What is so hard with what they currently have? Sure, it takes some ten minutes to get everything in order but really, how much time do you spend on fb every day?

The point is that you shouldn't have to spend 10 minutes severing ties that Facebook made without asking you first, especially since they didn't clearly inform each user that they had already unilaterally made those ties.

It has to do with CONTROL. Maybe I want to use an app, access someone else's pic of the day, without forever ceding all my info & friends, etc. Facebook is specifically constructed to make it impossible for me to access the majority of content without giving away not only my data, but my friends data. It's unacceptable.
While you're at it Zuckerberg, give a contact number so we can inform you greedy dumbasses when a virus hits your site that's not app-related.
