Spotify offers new cut-price package -- and you can now sign up without an invite!
Citing the renewed competition in the streaming-music sector, paidContent is reporting on Spotify's two new packages: Spotify Unlimited and Spotify Open.
Spotify Unlimited -- £4.99/month -- is a cut-down version of the current £9.99/month Premium service. Like the Premium service, all advertising has removed. You don't get offline access from your mobile phone however, nor do you get the higher-quality stream. Basically, it's £4.99/month to remove the ads. Cool.
Spotify Open -- free! -- is the same as the current Free package, but you do not need an invite to sign up. The caveat: you can only listen to music for 20 hours a month. Otherwise it's basically the same deal.
I can't see any mention of whether Spotify is now available in other countries, but I imagine it's still restricted to a handful of European nations (ed. note: it's still limited to Finland, France, Norway the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the U.K.) . Still, it's coming to America later in the year -- and you could always use a proxy server...

Sweet. I'm definitely going to try this out now.

20 hours a month? I'd go through that in a day and a half. Still a pretty good deal on the other ends.

Good for a parent or loved one -- or to try it out, before forking over the cash :)

Yes, Yes, you're correct. To bad they still don't have it in the US just yet. When they have it in the US I'll jump right on to try it and if it is as good as people say I'll fork over some money.

Just to clarify, invite accounts as well as accounts made during beta (which also required an invite) will work like Unlimited but, will have ads like Open. The official name for that package is Free.

I just tried to sign up (I'm in Australia) and got the following message (which I haven't seen before):
"It looks like you're accessing Spotify from outside our launch territiories. In order to buy Spotify premium, you will need a credit card that has been issued in one of our launch territories (i.e. Finland, France, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden or United Kingdom). As a Spotify Premium user you will have be able to use Spotify when you travel for an unlimited time period."
Aside from the spelling mistake (territories) and typo ("you will have be able") this is looking fairly promising, saves worrying about logging in through a proxy regularly, of course you need a credit card from one of the listed countries.

That's a pretty weird error message!
I like how it doesn't say 'you must be a citizen of one of these nations'. I can only imagine the pain of being ABLE to provide a worldwide service but not being ALLOWED to.
