ExtensionFM lands in the Chrome Extensions Gallery: a must-have for music lovers

A while back, former AOLer Dan Kantor was kind enough to give me (and boatloads of Download Squad readers) early access to his latest project: ExtensionFM. Late yesterday, it touched down in the Google Chrome Extensions Gallery

The interface is a bit more polished, but the core functionality remains the same: stumble across a website or blog with embedded MP3 files and stream the song in Google Chrome while you browse. Songs can be queued up playlist-style, and everything you listen to gets added to your ExtensionFM library. Site subscriptions are auto-updated, which means you'll automatically have access to the newest additions on sites which post MP3s regularly (like Spinner and Stereogum).

Got a Tumblr account? If you've been uploading tunes, you can log in via ExtensionFM and stream your last 50 uploads! Last.FM scrobbling is also supported should you want to let the world know what you're listening to.

One other significant -- and seriously cool -- new addition is cloud sync. Create an ExtensionFM account and your library follows you wherever you take Google Chrome. And yes, I did ask Dan why they chose not to use Chrome's bsync framework, and he assured me they have their reasons. "We were going to have to create accounts anyway at some point," he told me... I suspect the ExtensionFM crew has some additional coolness hidden up their collective sleeve -- we'll just have to wait patiently to find out what it is.
