The hidden first step of Google's redesign explanation?
Yesterday, Google posted a fairly in-depth overview and brief history of their new redesign that had been going through heavy testing and revision over the past few months. Jon Wiley, their senior designer on the project, went into detail explaining the process they went through in deciding on the new look. It was a pretty good rundown, but it seemed to be missing something...
Fixed it.
Sorry Google -- you know we love you.

Yeah, because no website ever had a sidebar before Bing, right?

Don't get me wrong, sidebar navs are no new thing nor are they even special. It's just that people have talked about this for years and they were always scoffed at and sent to Google's User Experience page to read things like "Google teams think twice before sacrificing simplicity in pursuit of a less important feature. Our hope is to evolve products in new directions instead of just adding more features."
Personally, I liked the intermediate sidebar nav they had going for a while. It was ugly, but it was nothing but functional :)

I wish they would stop this crap. They are so trying to be like Bing.
They always have some stupid excuse as to why they change. When they changed and made the search box huge, and the font huge, and bold, they said it "made searching more fun". what? How is making the font an eyesore "more fun" ?
If you read their feedback messageboard, people are rarely happy with the changes. And they won't offer an option for the older version. People hated the "fade-in" effect awhile back, they wouldn't offer a choice in the options to turn it off. It's still annoying, and there is no way to turn it off permanenly. They are just going to keep tacking on more and more crap until it is a complete visual copy of Bing.

Really, I see no problem with them trying to be more like Bing. I love Bing! (This coming from a former avid-Googler). I've actually found it to deliver more accurate and useful results.

Maybe you read the article before posting bozo. They were testing this from 2006.
