Photoshop CS5 Imaging Tip: content-aware spot healing and fill tools
One of Photoshop CS5's most talked-about and exciting features is its new 'content-aware' algorithm. Either for spot healing or filling arbitrary areas, the content-aware tools provide a new and surprisingly-veracious replacement for the clone brush and other antiquated methods.
The screencast is only a few minutes long, and even if you you haven't used Photoshop before, you will find the content-aware spot healing and fill tools impressive.
Back in the murky annals of Download Squad's history we used to have a 'Daily Imaging Tip' -- with Adobe's CS5 recent release and the slew of new functions that have been added, we're going to revive the Imaging Tips!

Everytime I tried using content-aware it always did what the old spot healing brush does...it messes up the whole image instead of fixing the mistake I wanted gone in the first place. It's not perfect but I guess you can't always get the best result.

Your mileage may vary, as always :)
I honestly have no idea how the algorithm works. It obviously looks at other parts of the image... like a bit of an 'RNG Clone Brush' perhaps...
I just try different brushes until it works! There's always clone for tricky bits.

I believe it just uses the edges around the brush and kinda like matches the tones and stretches the pixels out a bit to kinda "warp" together. If you know what I mean?

Maybe!
But you saw the 'fill' right? That took pixels from the other side of the image!

Alien Skin did it already years ago with an app called Imagedoctor

I can't remember exactly how long ago it was, but I'm sure it's at least 5 years.
If Content Aware doesn't do the trick, try this - might work better?

I've been messing around with Content-Aware for a few days and it is by far the greatest feature of CS5. Being able to easierly remove people from images is bloody great!

As long as you're not a paparazzi...

Content aware is awesome. Removed tree branch and revealed mountain behind it.
