Use Office 2010 to map a local drive letter to your free 25GB Live SkyDrive

Heck, if you tell an app like 7zip to chunk big files up into 50MB pieces you can store whatever the heck you want. If only there was a way to access your SkyDrive storage like a local hard drive without an app like Gladinet or SD Explorer...Why, that'd make it like a free Dropbox account x 12.5!
As it turns out, there is a way to do that -- and it's pretty darn easy to do now that Office 2010 is here.
Here's what you'll need to to turn your SkyDrive into your Z: drive (or whatever letter you choose):
- Office 2010 -- a trial version or unexpired beta is fine
- a Windows Live account
- ...the ability to follow directions
Fire up Powerpoint and create a new blank presentation (file -> new). Next, head back to the file menu and click save & send then choose save to web from the submenu.

Choose to save to SkyDrive. After logging in, you'll be able to choose a save location. Click it, then note the location which appears in the save window's address bar:

It's all downhill from here. Click at the end of the line (after Documents, for example) to highlight the path. Copy it to the clipboard.
Now right-click Computer on your start menu and choose map network drive. Select a drive letter, paste in the path, and choose to reconnect the drive. For reconnection to work, you need to have the Windows 7 online ID provider for Windows Live installed and your ID linked to your Windows login.

Now just click OK, and you're done! If everything went well, a new Explorer window (like the one at the top of this article) will appear with the contents of the folder you mapped. You'll have to repeat the process if you want access to multiple folders -- just save & send again and pick a different location!
Drag and drop files to SkyDrive...sync from your desktop to the cloud with SyncToy, you name it! Hopefully your upload speeds are a little better than mine, because 30KB/s just doesn't cut it.

" If only there was a way to access your SkyDrive storage like a local hard drive without an app like Gladinet or SD Explorer"
The whole point of this is to access the storage using features Windows has built-in. Why bother with Gladinet if you don't have to?

I was able to do it without office 2010. You may have to link you computer account to you live account prior to doing the steps below however.
1. Sign into skydrive and upload a word document to the desired folder.
2. Once uploaded, return to the folder and join the Office Web Apps Beta.
3. After signing up, click on your uploaded document and select view, on the far right should be the location url for the file, copy this url.
4.
The url should look something like this:
http://cid-c8daa1cc3635cc9a.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/.Public
Change it to this format:
https://wb9rpt.docs.live.net/c8daa1cc3635cc9a/.Public
5. Right click on 'My Computer', select 'Map Network Drive' and enter in the above changed address. When asked enter in your live e-mail and password and voila, you're done!

Hi, could you tell us where did you get the wb9rpt? It's probably not the same for everyone

To be honest, I have no idea. My tutorial was put together based upon information from multiple sources along with my own experience.

@Lee Thanks

You don't even need t o upload a Word doc and open it to get the URL; just browse to your public folder and copy the URL from your browser's Address Bar

Excellent. I've been looking for a way to do this without additional software for a while. Thank you.

Great but not work for me. I have Office 2010 RTM but I receive error message "Could not open ...".
What's mean https://wb9rpt from your changed URL ?
thanks you

I'm not really sure what you mean, following the instructions worked for me.

It works, but it doesn't work. The drive shows up in Explorer, but the size info mirrors my boot drive, and there are no files in it.

Heh...offering further proof that it does, in fact, work when done properly!
Psst...Mark, buddy, it's ok to use your real email address ;)

So, anyone had luck creating some sort of automated script/process for chunking files that are going onto the skydrive? I work with a lot of larger (100-300 MB) photoshop documents, and some sort of automation would be amazing. I have no idea if it would be easy, or even possible to implement something like this-- all I can think of at the moment would be a little custom item inserted into the "send to" menu, or something similar, as I dont think windows natively supports automatically breaking up files sent to a specific drive.

Does somebody got it working in XP ?
thanx

Doesn't work on me bro. There might be something wrong with my computer.

I presume that's something to do with needing the Windows Live ID provider for Windows 7.

But hold on. Isn't that URL temporary? I mean MS may move your account between servers and the URL may change. This has happened to me with deeplinked Sky Drive files.

I'm really liking this post, been looking for a solution like this for some time now. Unfortunately, I'm only getting about 30KBps Up when copying files to the new locally mapped drive.
mentalmonkey348Apr 26th 2010 2:13PM
It just keeps asking for my password when I try to map the drive. Any ideas?
