Microsoft updates DreamSpark, students can now get Visual Studio 2010 free
Yes, the site might be pink... and blue... with astronauts, satellites and unicorns... but don't be fooled! Microsoft DreamSpark is all kinds of awesome! No kidding: if you're a university or high school/college student, you can download Microsoft developer, designer and gaming software for free. For a full list of the software available with DreamSpark, check the support FAQ. In brief: Visual Studio 2010, Windows Phone(!), SQL Server 2008, Expression Studio 1.0 (and 2.0 trial version) and Windows Server 2008.
Even if you're not a student, it's worth checking out the DreamSpark site to experience Microsoft's attempt at young-and-savvy. Phrases such as 'pony up good cash' and 'totally cool' are rife. There's even a rhetorical question or two thrown in: "Oh, and by the way? These are the serious versions for serious people. We're talking, the big-time stuff."
Anyway, whatever -- this is awesome. Go get your freebies, students!

seems this might even work without an edu-email address

While true that it doesnt require you to have an edu address, the requirements to access the site are a lot stricter than most. Back when my school wasnt supported, i had to be verified by JourneyEd.com, but now that it is, they use the school's login API, and you have to have access to your school's website and login to be verified on DreamSpark.

I also would like to point out that unlike DreamSpark's version of 2008, this does not require a serial code, much like the version of VS 2008 that you get from MSDN or MSDNAA.
I have been using the various betas of VS 2010 and i can say its a great piece of software. My favorite addition this time around was the intellisense searching. When you start typing a word, it actually searches through the various options and list all the ones that match, for example if you type listBox1.color, it will suggest things like BackColor and ForeColor, even though they end with color, not start with it, unlike most IDE's including VS 2008.

The last time I used Visual Studio was... shit, Visual Studio 6?
At the MIX keynote they showed off the Silverlight/XNA development thing, using VS2010 -- showed the kind of Intellisense you're talking about. Seriously cool.
Makes me want to develop software again!

I just tried this and I can verify it works. I already have access to MSDNAA from my college, but this is just awesome. When I signed into my Live account, it made me verify that I was a student at my school. Then it brought me to a special login page on my college's server. After that, it verified me as a student, and I have access to the software. :)

Too bad our college doesn't give us an email address... and our college doesn't support the DreamSpark program.
