Netflix will delay Fox and Universal releases for 28 days
If you subscribe to Netflix and watch a lot of new releases, you won't be too thrilled about this news: Netflix just announced agreements with Fox and Universal to delay those companies' new movies for 28 days. Netflix already had this kind of deal with Warner Bros., and it's basically an attempt by the movie industry to shore up slipping DVD sales. Netflix didn't make this deal for nothing, though. The companies agreed to release more streaming content for Netflix, which is a big deal when the Watch Instantly feature is becoming a bigger part of Netflix' business all the time. All in all, probably a smart business move for Netflix, which has recently been focusing on building up its subscriber base by bringing streaming to new platforms like the Nintendo Wii and Apple iPad.

Meh. I have hundreds of movies in my queue and if I had a burning desire to see something I've already seen it in the theater so while I think the DISTRIBUTORS are idiots of requiring this it doesn't change my opinion on Netflix one bit.

Well, if new releases weren't so crap, they would definitely sell more DVDs, so please stop blaming piracy/renting.

What the studios are misunderstanding, is that most releases have very little value above a that of a single viewing. The consumer demand just isn't there for paying much above rental.

i agree with you here. there are maybe about 5 movies a year that i feel like i have to have and will watch repeatedly, other than that, that $1 Redbox rental suits me just fine. not Netflix, but the message is the same, i don't pay $20 for a new release movie, because i don't feel it's worth that much.

so what they're saying is that I should torrent their movies instead....

My #1 disappointment in Netflex is that their streaming library really does suck. If this will improve the quality of that library, I'm fine with that.

While it is Netflix's streaming library, and I agree it sucks, we need to focus our efforts on the distributors who only allow what is there.

Now if only they'd offer captioning on the streaming movies, I might actually *use* that part of the service for more than foreign films...

This isn't really any different from my current situation, since they can't meet supply and demand on new releases already.
If I really want to watch a new release I can simply take a quick walk to my local Blockbuster who apparently don't have to play by these rules.
