Google rigs search results to help prevent suicide
Google doesn't often rig search results, but they're making an exception when it comes to suicide. Search results for terms that indicate someone may be at risk of taking his or her own life now include the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, prominently displayed above other results and at a larger size than ads. So far, the list of search terms that pop up the suicide hotline number is "conservative," according to Google. It includes "ways to commit suicide," and similar searches, but not "end my own life."
At a time when many people turn to Google before even calling a friend for help or dialing 911, it's nice to see the search giant taking steps to save lives. According to the New York Times, this is the second time Google has modified the search results to help with possible emergency situations. The first was adding the poison control hotline number to searches for poison emergencies.

A similar query on Google.com did not return similar result with a hotline number. I do not have such thoughts though ;-)
The engine might be looking at the IP from which this query is coming from and I am outside of US. This is US IPs only I guess.

Well, this is good and bad. I really dont like them rigging any results, but then again, its hard to argue against rigging suicide results.

I don't really consider this rigging (unless they are changing the order of the below results). This is pretty much what they do when you search for weather, news, stocks, etc. They are just adding a little "this may help you out" result at the top.

when i read the headline i thought Google would filter results that explained how to commit suicide. even then i would be ok with that.

There's help in Australia also if anyone is interested. Just an idea if you don't want an international phone bill.

Doesn't seem to work in Canada too, and while searching for "Commit suicide", the one of the first result is a Twitter feed with: "If you commit suicide you are very selfish."... way to go :)

technically that is the teachings of most Christian faiths. they see it as a sin because you are selfishly denying god's gift of life that he gave you. i am Catholic but as someone who has seen a few friends lose their battles with depression and as someone who suffers from depression myself, i alway thought this was unfair and more or less a slap in the face to people with mental illnesses. its like the church denies the legitimacy of depression.
but anyway. back to talking about the interwebs :)
