Verizon's Motorola Droid users finally get Android 2.1!
After much flip-flopping from Verizon about the release date of Android 2.1 for Motorola Droid owners, our sister site, Engadget, says that Droid Does...finally get a firmware update this week. A limited rollout has already started, and most customers should see the update starting on Thursday. It's an over-the-air release, so don't worry about having to download and install it manually. Make sure you keep your battery at over 40%, though, because Verizon says that the OTA update won't go through if you don't have enough juice.
In an internal email picked up by Engadget, Verizon outlines a rollout schedule that includes around 10,000 Droids so far, with another 200,000 slated to get the update on Thursday. This email comes after a series of setbacks with the release. In fact, the release date was still listed as "TBA" just a couple of days ago.
Frustrated Droid owners will finally get their goodies, though, including Yahoo! Mail integration, Pinch-to-Zoom, the new Gallery app, and speech-to-text features.

Cool and what do the loyal G1 owners get? A kick in the face.

If you own a phone that old, you should have an opportunity to renew your contract and get a new phone for practically nothing...

I only have the G1 for a year now. I'm from Europe and we always get the cool stuff later or something.
But the bright side is; a year from now, I can renew my contract and get the newest android that's even more awesome than the most awesome android phone at this time :)

Will this update wipe the phone free, or will we keep our contacts, texts, apps etc...?

I would imagine they would think of a standard backup utility that would keep your preset configuration.

I can't tell if my phone got the upgrade, I know it sounds stupid but when I go into 'Settings - About Phone', under Firmware Version it says "2.1-update1" which makes me think it has the 2.1 update, but it doesnt have any of the features that are talked about, i.e. - pinch zoom, new gallery, voice to text, etc. Thoughts?

Just got a Devour a few weeks ago. Any word on if/when it's going to get an OTA update to 2.1?
