Latest Firefox 3.7 pre-alpha adds built-in Aero glass support

Ages ago, Mozilla gave us all a sneak peek at what the updated default theme might look like in Firefox 3.7. In January, the UI elements finally made their first appearance. Now, it looks like Aero glass support has been switched on for users running Windows 7 and Vista.
You can see the change from 3.7 Alpha 2 (top) to 3.7a4pre (bottom). As you can see, it's no longer just the title bar and window border -- Firefox's main, navigation, and bookmarks menus are now all glassed-out.
From what we've seen in our comments previously, not all of you are going to be excited about all-over transparency. While I haven't found an about:config value yet to disable the glass effect, I don't doubt that one exists (or will be added before 3.7 is complete).
Despite earlier rumors, a Firefox 3.7 release is still part of Mozilla's plans -- we ought to see it sometime in May or June of this year.

This is currently a work in progress, which is why it doesn't look like the concept images yet.

Hmm, they even copied exact refresh button, and a slightly modified home button from Google Chrome. Why don't you guys think creatively? Also instead of making it to use Aero features, try to make the browser faster than Chrome if you can...

Firefox has had that exact refresh button since version 3.0, which was way before Chrome. Firefox also has a star for their bookmarking, which also looks exactly like Chrome. If anything, Chrome copied Firefox when they first made their browser.
Next time, do a little research before accusing.

Hi Android Underling,
Thanks for you comment, I know "Firefox" is the one who "invented" that button, but my point is how they look. Mozilla changed all those buttons to have rounded corners and made them larger to look like Chrome, even look at the rounded corners of address bar and search bar! Don't say no but that is the truth.
Next time when you reply to some one, first look at what they exactly saying.

viky.prabakaran,
I know what you said. I am not saying Firefox "invented" that button, I am saying the look of it has not changed. Sure, the refresh symbol is placed in a beveled box, but its not copying Chrome. You will notice that Chrome's buttons are not exactly beveled, unless you hover over them. You may say this is only a small difference, but what about the fact that Chrome's refresh symbol is exactly the same as Firefox, save for a thin box border around it? Small difference? I would say so. And putting a border/box around a symbol is not exclusive to chrome. Opera has been doing that for a long time.
As for the slightly rounded address bar corners, safari 4 did it before chrome. So again, nobody is copying Chrome.

I know Safari already had all that rounded corner and opera has it already, but look how larger they made it, usually the address bar of all browsers were small in height, but Chrome came with the idea of making it larger and legible. Moreover Chrome is the one that strongly implemented the square round corners, where Firefox seems to follow the same thing.
I always say chrome copied all features from other browsers and made it hit, thats the same with Firefox, which actually copied the tabs from Opera.
The beveling thing is same except Firefox tried the same thing but the other way around of Chrome.
I was not just talking about just this blog, I also know what other releases Firefox planning to release, and they "Copied" the Two button options from Chrome, No one can refuse that. If you have seen any of Firefox 4 screenshots you will understand what I meant.

Are you really arguing about how the browser looks? Couldn't pick a less childish thing to argue over? I mean seriously....
Oh and just an FYI, Firefox has looked that way since 3.0 which was before Chrome came on the scene. And even then it was just a modification of their 2.7 scheme. If anything, it was (and is) more Opera-like than Chrome-like. So your argument is basically moot.

I don't see the change? It still looks like the first screenshot....

Try going to Help>Check for updates and performing an update if there is one. Once I did that, the aero glass effects appeared by default.

what about the internals?
Is FF faster, more secure, lighter in resources?

If anybody is not getting the glassing, it is due to any theme or persona. change it to default and you'll get the glassed out version.

one thing i don't like Chrome because it doesn't have native live bookmark,

If one enables directwrite, the text is all messed up. Nice look though.

Looks like they have removed the aero glass in the latest nightly build.
AnDrewishMar 30th 2010 2:58PM
The Aero glass isn't working for me, I have disabled all themes and personas as well (I didn't have any). I wouldn't recommend downloading it yet, not worth it.

My firefox alpha just updated, and all I have to say is this is so UGLY! The text in my meny bars is barely readable! I hope I can quickly find the secret about:config option to disable it ASAP. See a screenshot of this abomination here: http://davr.org/pics/ugly_aero.png
It looks nothing like the screenshots :(
Byron YuMar 31st 2010 12:58PM
The Aero theme has been disabled for me 2 builds ago. Is it just me?
DavidApr 2nd 2010 6:52PM
Yep, just got disabled for me too. A pity, because I just found a Vista hack I could install to make the glass look better.
