Bing announces future FourSquare integration

Bing Foursquare

This isn't happening just yet, but it's pretty exciting news. NeoWin spotted a Microsoft announcement of some upcoming Bing features. The most exciting, to me, is the prospect of FourSquare integration.

You will be able to search any location, and overlay it with a FourSquare "layer." You will then get icons showing where users in this area have been "checking in." This effectively shows you what the locals currently consider hot -- where the action is right now. I think this is pretty amazing. When you go to a new city, instead of relying on an old tour guide or even on a website, you could look at the map in real-time and see if there are a lot of check-ins at a particular location. You are then at the liberty to check out what it is, and just go there. It's a spontaneous way of looking at a new city through the eyes of locals. Of course, it's also useful if you are a local; with a glance, you can check out where the hot spots are in your neighborhood.
