MakeMKV offers simple cross-platform Blu-Ray ripping
Software developers basically have DVD ripping down to a science at this point. No matter what operating system you run, you're only a few clicks away from importing a movie from a DVD to your hard drive. Blu-Ray, on the other hand, is a tougher nut to crack. That's why it's exciting to see a cross-platform app that handles both DVD and Blu-Ray ripping: MakeMKV.
MakeMKV offers one-click ripping of most DVDs and Blu-Ray discs on Mac, Windows or Linux. Advanced settings are available, but most users will just happy to pop the disc in, click, and let 'er rip. To play MKV files -- not as common a file format as .avi or .mpg, maybe, but familiar to anyone who's ever torrented a Blu-Ray movie -- you'll need free software like VLC. MakeMKV is currently available as a free beta, says Lifehacker, so it's smart to grab it now if you're too frugal to pay for a competing app.

KM Player is better than VLC to play mkv files.

Hey Jay, is there any dvd player out there that has usb port which could play mkv files?
Jay HathawayMar 22nd 2010 8:20PM
Not sure. If you've ripped the DVD and don't have the original, you could probably just burn a copy ...

What i meant is to putting the movie into USB and playing it in a dvd player with usb port which could play mkv files. I know WDTV does that.

i have a WDTV HD and mkv files have been hit or mis for me. video playback is always splendid but most of the time there is no audio. something to do with the way the audio is encoded that isn't compatible with the player. but i supposed if you knew what you were doing you could rip them the right way and get the right audio. just be warned it isn't fool proof.

Thanks kojo87 for the warning. Hmmmm, i was thinking to buy WDTV thinking it would play all mkv files, just like KM Player or VLC would do to all mkv movies.

i recently got wd tv and .mkv works for me . . .

kojo87 - The reason you are not hearing audio on your MKV's is probably because they have DTS audio, and you do not have the WDTV plugged into a receiver to perform the DTS decoding. In which case you need to covert the audio to AC3 audio...

I use DivX to Play MKV. Not sure if it's Windows 7 or if DivX installed the MKV codec for me but MKV works on Windows media player (but for some reason subtitles don't).

Then what's the easiest way to play back MKV's on my 360?
I used to rip my movies to AVI for easy playback.
