Google: we're going to take GMail to ludicrous speed
Yes! It's not only me that thinks Gmail is slow! For the longest time, I wondered if I had a 'slow' Gmail server, or if my large inbox was crippling me in some way. It turns out that Google knows about the issue, and TechCrunch is reporting that it will 'soon get a lot faster'.Speaking at SXSW, Google panellist Jonathan Perlow acknowledged the sluggishness of Gmail and said 'we are fixing it.' When addressing the question of Gmail's slowness, Perlow noted that only power users -- those with burgeoning inboxes and a multitude of rules and labels -- consider the service slow. A half-second wait is nothing when you only have five unread items, but when you have 100+ it adds up!
As a free user of Gmail, I feel privileged to use their excellent service, despite its occasional slow-downs -- I guess it's something to do with free users being allocated less server resources. But I was wondering, do enterprise users of Google Apps also experience the same issues?

They should get Offline Mail working on HTML5 instead of Gears aswell. On 64-bits Linux and the Mac at school I can't do shit.

I second that

I'm sure that's coming soon, with their retirement of Gears :)

Glad to know it's not just me that has this issue.

Our IT guys inform me that we have an enterprise version of Gmail/Google Apps, and from experience I can say that it is indeed just as slow as my separate Gmail account. Faster speed will be an awesome enhancement.

Yeesh... I'd want it faster, if I paid for it.
Cheers for the info!

I've been having trouble with loading the standard version of Gmail on IE8 lately. Have other people been having that problem (endless "Loading..." or error #103)? The older version (https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1&ov=1) works ok.
PS Just in case people are tempted, I'll post "Don't use IE. Use Mozilla/Chrome" for you.

It was incredibly slow for me, actually -- lots of 'Loading...' and then time-outs.
Just after I published this story, interestingly :P

i wish gmail natively supported a preview pane layout like all other webmail because it's so much faster to navigate. i'm pretty sure gmail had it in the early days, but gmail labs doesn't even have it anymore. i do sort into "folders" (really more like tags,) and gmail does have strong filtering but finding a particular message is usually fastest when you can see the message text while perusing the folder index because the vast majority of emails re-use the same subject lines or use none at all.
