Windows Phone 7 Series at SXSW

With a large Windows Phone 7 Series sign calling me I set out to find an actual working example of a new Windows powered phone. With a little finagling was able to sweet talk my way into the Microsoft's blogger lounge at South by Southwest Interactive.
While there seems to be only one example running around here somewhere, which I'm working to track down, there was a demo of the OS on a touch screen TV.
Here are some of the features that stood out....

Alphabetical Search: say you're in your contacts and you want to quickly jump to a particular name, i.e. Smith. You can simply click the letter header, it shows the alphabet, then you can click the letter you want. Very slick.

The Calendar: it pulls from multiple calendars and shows the entries in different colors, i.e. personal vs. business.

Some other tidbits: while there wasn't an example, the Microsoft rep confirmed that the text messaging will be threaded. You'll be able to pin searches to the home page creating a new tile so you can quickly get back to them. The example the rep used was a search for BBQ places near your location, mmmm Texas BBQ. That's an extremely useful feature when you're traveling.
From what I've seen so far it's a very well thought out UI, can't wait to get my hands on a real example.

I like the simplicity of this new OS and yet the scalability it offers is big... I have used many interfaces, the HTC one, and many more third party GUIs, and in my conclusion, at least for me, they're all bloated

Wish I could see this phone in an actual demo - especially since I LIVE here in Austin and SXSWi is literally right in my back yard! I've got a Tilt2 and am still bummed that MS ultimately decided not to upgrade any of the 6.x phones to 7 however by the time the first phones are actually out for sale, my contract will be half way through and I can wait for all the bugs to be worked out before I am ready for my next phone. At least that's what I tell myself every freaking day I have to read about these new phones!
Oh, and if you get a chance, DO NOT MISS EATING AT SALT LICK BBQ while you're in town. Stubb's is good but Salt Lick is the best around. The original location is a ways out but you can go to the one up north on Hwy 79 and its not too far. Regardless, it's WORTH IT!!!

It does look nice. I hear there's a real one around Austin somewhere but from what the Microsoft folks are saying there are only a few examples anywhere.
Thanks for the BBQ tip Michael!

Cool, close to next step in taking a Silverlight WP7 App from conception right through to marketplace!
