Spectrum Analyzer showcases HTML5 Audio's potential
You know those IQ test questions, "An apple is to an orange as a ________ is to a wall"? Well, HTML5 is to HTML4 as a photon torpedo is to a snowball hurled by a sleepy five-year old. Or something. If that sounds jumbled, it's just because HTML5 is challenging my notion of what HTML even is and that's making me very confused.
The HTML5 Audio Data API is just one example of what can be done with HTML5. It's an audio visualization, done completely in HTML5. It's so bleeding-edge I wasn't even able to view it properly -- you need patched versions of Firefox 3.7 alpha for it to render. I did watch the Youtube video (after the break), and once you get past the mind-numbing music and realize you're not watching Flash, it's actually kind of cool.
I just hope that when HTML5 finally catches on I'll be able to figure it out well enough to stay relevant. Feeling old here!

"An apple is to an orange as a ________ is to a wall"
Umm, ceiling?
Don't tell me you didn't try to finish the analogy too.

I did. I went "Subtract the a and insert freedom into the blank" but that is when my psychologists asked.

Hehe; A friend pointed out that my answer was a bit complicated so I thought I'd explain. My first thought was a Window or more specifically a wall with a window. A small change in the grand scheme of things but then I considered how some people think that an apple is the opposite of an orange and thus inserted Freedom or the absence of a wall.

G_ddamn that music was nice. It's almost 4AM now so it sounded smooth and mellow. Anybody know where I can get a longer version of it?

Hi, I'm the author of that demo - If you go to the demo ( http://www.storiesinflight.com/jsfft/visualizer/index.html ) with any Firefox you can listen to the full audio track (all 30 minutes of it) even if you don't download the patched beta of Firefox 3.7, you just won't get the visuals...

Thanks for the link Thomas. It's really mellow. I hope to hear it on the Soundscapes channel on Dish.
