is it really necessary to put those piracy encouraging "hints" such as "both Fraps and Snapz are commercial... but I'm sure you can work around that." :/
isn't it sufficient to just specify if software is free or paid? without those stupid 'hint hint, wink wink' piracy inserts? :/

Well, it's my personal view -- if I want to record something, and then show it to my friends, I don't think I should pay for that benefit.
I would never suggest piracy if you are doing something commercial -- but there's a reason special provisions usually exist for 'educational purposes' :)

so just because you think you shouldn't have to pay for such an app, you would disrespect the work of developers of fraps and would pirate their software nonetheless?
i'm really surprised that such a high profile website would encourage software piracy, including your "educational purposes" bullshit excuse.
your attitude is really unexpected me and i lost a great deal of respect for this website.
wasn't this site at one point used to be called The Open Source blog?
if you don't want to pay for software, why would you encourage software piracy rather than going legal free open-source route?
you know you could just http://lmgtfy.com/?q=free%20alternative%20fraps

Well, in my opinion, Fraps should offer a cheaper or free license for non-commercial use. Most software is provided with a variety of licenses (take a look at student prices for Microsoft stuff).
I have a lot of views on piracy, but this isn't really the place for them. I apologise if my views are offensive tho'; but bear in mind it is my personal view, and not that of Download Squad, or even the other bloggers.

yes, i also agree that that fraps is a bit more expensive that what i would like it to be. but that is not an excuse to pirate it.
thankfully windows (and even osx and linux) platform is big enough that is free/open-source alternative for virtually every software.
and fraps is extremely functional in free mode.

I'm pretty sure that no one *has* to torrent video games. It's absurd to suggest that companies have made it hard to play video games when companies try to sell as many as possible. Granted, I understand the lost disc, the scratched disc, the crashed hard drive, the too-many-installs, the whatever, but really... I doubt that's even 5% of the traffic, and there's also the possibility of cloning the disc yourself for "backup purposes."
For emulation, I can see some validity, but when companies like Nintendo make an effort to bring those games back into the market, there's no excuse. Even then, there is still a USED video game market, heard of it? For those out-of-country ones, there's even an import market. Gaming is not a right that somehow justifies stealing them.
and honestly, if you want to record something in "real" life, you have to buy a camcorder--not steal one. Likewise, if you want to record something on your computer, you have to buy some software like FRAPS or make use of something freeware like WeGame. It's really not that hard.
Gaming isn't really something that can be used for educational purposes, either. Even if Sun's OpenOffice team wanted to analyze Microsoft Office and gain insight from it, i'm pretty sure they'd have to buy a copy or two.
we're such sheep.
