Ubuntu finally gets new logo and looks in 10.04

Ubuntu has been the "Flagship Linux" distro for quite a while now. This is the distro most people judge Linux by (and the only one I personally work with). However, its visual style remained constant for a long time, and has been starting to look a bit stale. It's difficult to convey "innovation" to end users when your product keeps the same look, version to version.
There's been a lot of talk of changing this, and yesterday Ubuntu finally announced their new look for Lucid Lynx, dubbed "Light". It includes a new logo (both light and dark), new theme (light and dark), bootsplash, and even logos for the Ubuntu forums, Xubuntu and other related projects. I've put up the theme and splash screen after the jump, and you can see more eye-candy on the announcement page itself.

Nice and all, but will they get the drivers and whatnot right this time? The past 2 versions have been a nightmare to get everything installed correctly on an HP Mini
SanjisanMar 4th 2010 9:27PM
I think its the fact that you have an HP. Linux seems to dislike HPs very much.

really? i am running linux mint (based on ubuntu) on an HP G60-101CA and have found it to run perfectly. specs below.
3gb DDR2 RAM
AMD athlon QL-60 x2 @1.9ghz/core
Nvidia 8200M G
15.6" LCD with LED backlight
synaptic touchpad
broadcom atheros a/b/g/n wif card

I'm running on an HP G60 as well, and everything works flawlessly for me under 10.04. Even the wifi button is trying really hard to glow the correct color.

I saw this yesterday and let me just say this
"I plan on enjoying it."
That is all. :-D
I also read this morning that window controls aren't necessarily on the left side. there were later screen shoots with them on the right.

I swear I saw that background on a Mac once. Wait, make that every recent Mac.
They couldn't have thought of something slightly more original-looking? It just looks like a cheap OS X copy.
kojo87Mar 4th 2010 7:00PM
did Apple patent the color Purple too?
RollinsMar 4th 2010 7:06PM
Oh, give me a break. Just look! http://www.apple.com/macosx/
You can't tell me that there aren't some strong similarities between the two. Ubuntu is in dire need of a refresh in the looks department, but all that's going to do is remind your average consumer of a Mac.
Although given the choice, I'd still take this scheme over the old orange/brown/ugly one.
AndrewMar 4th 2010 11:05PM
Yes, because Apple holds the patents on glowing color backgrounds...
RollinsMar 5th 2010 9:40AM
They don't have patents, they have mindshare. When people see a purple glowing background, they're likely to think Apple. I'm not saying Ubuntu can't use that, I'm saying it's a strategic misfire to do so.
mattbatesMar 6th 2010 4:09AM
You think? I think it's a fine strategy. Because maybe people will see this and think 'hey that looks like Apple's OS' then they'll see that they can install it on their crappy old PC for free, and maybe they'll download it and give it a shot.
What background would you prefer? An orange and brown one with a stylized bird on it?
MrGreencastleMar 4th 2010 11:47AM
Hmm, I disagree, I don't think it looks like a cheap mac copy, and I have a mac. The only thing that really looks similar is the window controls being on the left-hand side. Other than that, this looks like a refreshing update! Maybe ill finally go back to good ol' ubu in the future.
RahabibMar 4th 2010 5:16PM
I really hope they allow you the option to put the window controls back on the right hand side where it should be. Thats going to annoy me when I update otherwise.
CamMar 4th 2010 7:46PM
yeah, open up gconf-editor from the f2 prompt, navigate to apps>metacity>general and edit the window controls (probably? Confirmation anyone? my ubuntu box is AWOL) to read menu;minimize, maximize, close
EthanMar 20th 2010 6:09PM
I can confirm that. I have it running right now, actually. I changed mine as soon as I booted. However, it should be a : rather than a ; , which makes it "menu;minimize, maximize, close"
AemonyMar 4th 2010 11:46AM
Sexy! Now I'm looking forward to next month even more than yesterday.
motangMar 4th 2010 12:32PM
Looking for this release even more now.
spychallaMar 4th 2010 1:12PM
I think I will still stick with Mint Linux instead.
KeegdnaBMar 4th 2010 4:20PM
If I were the type of person who used the word "money" as an adjective, I would do so to describe that logo
FloMar 4th 2010 8:52PM
The only thing I don't like about it are the tops of the windows (forgot the word) Where the button thingys are.
