Steam's definitely coming to Mac -- and maybe Valve's first-party games too!

Even if you're not a gamer, head over to MacRumours and admire Valve's teasing artistic genius. Basically, Valve sent six Apple/Valve-franchise mashups to the main Mac enthusiast blogs -- and that's it. No press release, no information -- just an image and a single sentence: "In anticipation of an upcoming announcement from Valve". The announcement will almost certainly be at the Game Developers Conference, which starts March 9th.
There's one question on everyone's mind though: is this just Steam for Mac, or are we going to see Half Life, Portal, Team Fortress and Left 4 Dead on the Mac?! Damnit, I'm trying to retain an iota of steady ambivalence, but I just can't do it. Sorry.
WHO CARES ABOUT MAC NEWS? GIVE ME PORTAL 2!

With teaser images like that I'd say the orange box games/left 4 dead are definitely coming to mac.
Personally, I want native Linux versions.
Sebastian AnthonyMar 4th 2010 8:33AM
Well, the fact that they've ported the Orange box suite to PS3 means they're CAPABLE of porting it to other architectures... I guess OpenGL would hit Mac and Linux, eh?
We'll see in a few days :)
Zachary WaldowskiMar 4th 2010 11:07AM
@Sebastian: EA was the one to port it to PS3.
Sebastian AnthonyMar 4th 2010 11:14AM
Ya, a friend told me that just after I posted the comment -- apparently it was a bad port too (I haven't played it!)
Still... it's still POSSIBLE we might see the first-party games on Mac/Linux!

I was expecting to see Alyx in a penguin suit this morning :(
Sebastian AnthonyMar 4th 2010 8:34AM
You and me both, sister.
But the sentry/sentry pic IS pretty awesome.

I love the quote at MacRumors that says Steam is "essentially, a PC game App Store."
Sebastian AnthonyMar 4th 2010 9:15AM
Those Mac users need things to be boiled down into very simple concepts...
'Just click.'
Annoying PosterMar 4th 2010 9:14AM
who gives a fuk about mac what about a native linux client
digamejhMar 4th 2010 9:37AM
Apparently somewhere between 5 and 10% of computer users do, depending on who's counting.
But yes, a native Linux client would be nice too.
Marty K.Mar 4th 2010 10:20AM
I 5th a native Linux client! I can run Steam now via Wine, and if I can run games like Left 4 Dead at a decent frame rate through a Windows EMULATOR, they should play near-perfectly natively. Also, if you can do in in a non-DirectX environment on a Mac (presumably through OpenGL), you can do it in Linux, especially with the open-source Nvidia nouveau driver almost ready for prime time.
Marty K.Mar 4th 2010 10:23AM
Which reminds me. Linux fans, to the Steam forums and NAG! ;)
Sebastian AnthonyMar 4th 2010 10:25AM
With nagging we will CHANGE THE WORLD!
But yeah, presumably if these games are ported to Mac, it'll also be for Linux.
But as a commenter said above... where's Alyx in a penguin suit...
Marty K.Mar 4th 2010 10:34AM
Yes, yes we will.
I was just referring to Linux users' seemingly innate ability to swarm a forum en masse and demand support on their platform of choice.
When you go Linux, you sort of have to accept that you're going to get the short end of the stick when it comes to anything proprietary, and so a community effort on behalf of Linux users is a great thing to witness.
I feel sorry for the poor Steam Support admins! ;)
Go get 'em, guys!

If any Linux users want to vent their frustrations to Valve, I've started a thread http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13822988

Power to the people! Grass roots movement, RIGHT HERE!
robsethMar 4th 2010 12:10PM
Does this mean I would automatically have Mac OS versions of any Windows game I bought on Steam if they exist?
probably not...but it would be a nice perk.
Sebastian AnthonyMar 4th 2010 12:14PM
I think you'll actually have access to your entire library -- it wouldn't make sense if they asked you to buy both versions (Valve aren't douchebags, historically).
gonintendoMar 4th 2010 5:47PM
yeah, but it costs money to port the games. i can see them charging a fee, sort of like the itunes fee for converting your songs to drm free files
Scott ViethMar 6th 2010 10:12PM
Guys, VIRTUALIZATION! I can see them set it up so that they put some sort of virtualization layer on it, and minimize the strain in making a PC game work on a Mac. It would make sense, and even if they charged a one time fee for that cross platform functionality, you'd pay it. I would.
