Facebook revenue estimated at $1 billion; we're not surprised
CNET's Caroline McCarthy says Facebook is predicted to pull in over $1B of revenue this year. Why am I not surprised? There are a couple of interesting things to note here:
1) This is just a guess. An educated one, maybe, but Facebook is still a privately held company so nobody has "real" numbers.
2) They're making these (supposed) oodles of money without using conventional banner ads. They've switched completely to "engagement ads", which are those annoying ads on the top-right corner. That's interesting because it means they don't have to share the revenue with an ad network -- they're their own publisher.
I'm not sure how long this whole Facebook thing is going to last. I'm getting the feeling it's a bit of a bubble. Tumblr is gaining popularity, and Facebook hasn't really brought anything new to the table for a while (apart from constant interface and terms-of-service changes). Time will tell, I guess.

I knew Facebook was in trouble when my 65 year old neighbor asked me to help her setup an account so she could communicate with her granddaughter at university. The woman actually bought a computer and internet access for this reason only.
College students built Facebook and they will soon build something else they can use to talk to their friends about who they hooked up with last night without grandma seeing it too.

As a college student, I don't see Facebook going away any time soon. I can tell you that 99% of the students at my school (a very large flagship state school) have never heard of Tumblr, and have no interest in finding out what it is. I can tell you there are 130,000 people in my university's Facebook network, something that can't claim by a long shot. Facebook has its issues, but it's not going away for quite a while.

I HATE those stinkin' ads!! I changed my status from single to married last week just so I would stop getting all those dating site ads on every screen. I got everything from interracial dating, Jewish singles, BBWs, everything under the sun. Now as a "married" man, I get ads for condos and "discreet affairs" sites.
