Grooveshark's iPhone app is unbelievably awesome, but totally unapprovable
I'm not shy about my love of Grooveshark. No one pays me to say it, it's just the best streaming music app I've used -- and it's fully functional in Canada unlike some of its geotarded cousins in the audio game. They caused a bit of a ruckus recently when they decided to push their iPhone app -- which had been roundly denied by Apple -- via Cydia, doing an end run around Jobs and Co.
There are two things to know about the app. First, it's awesome. It's quite possibly the greatest thing I've ever installed on my jailbroken iPod touch. Second, there's just no way Apple would ever have approved Grooveshark the way it was released. As much as I enjoy the ability to make single songs and entire playlists available offline with the push of a button, it's not the kind of functionality Apple wants on its devices.
ed: as pointed out by commenters, Spotify -- which was approved -- does offline music as well. I've reached out to Grooveshark Josh Bonnain for some clarification about what went down. It's also worth noting that both Palm and Blackberry approved Grooveshark.
That said, if you're using a jailbroken device, find Grooveshark and install it. The app is pure mobile music goodness, and the missing piece in Grooveshark's all-around awesomeness puzzle.
Apart from providing fast access to your playlists and favorite songs, you've also got Grooveshark's entire library at your disposal via the search screen. You can also favorite, like, and dislike tunes while you listen.
Have a look at the screenshots after the break, and see what you're missing if you don't have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod!
Now if they could just put an end to those nasty record label lawsuits...

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but Apple have already approved an app that is very similar - Spotify.
Granted, I don't think Groovesharks content is legal, but the actual point made here, that apple wouldn't allow such functionality in an app is just wrong.

Intriguing, but, if you're gonna write up an article about something, it would make sense that you would describe why your thought this application was so "awesome" in stead of just relying on images to "prove" your point.
Marc's right in that based on Apple's policy they wouldn't approve this due to content restrictions.

I have download the app from cydia, but it appears you need a VIP account to login. So I have to pay for this ? did anyone else get this ?

I have been using groove shark for 2 days now. Totally awsome.
You can save huge play list on the computer and then load them up on the Iphone version, and down load all files to the iphone for when therer is no reception.
If look up a song that you like it will play simillar songs and the more you like/dislike songs the better the choices get.
You can save play lists on the go from these suggestions or your own ones.
I ahave found a way to access these files. If you go in to var/temp they are all sitting there ready to be moved or saved to your computer with an iphone browser. Perhaps I should keep this to my self but Im feeling generous.
yes its $3 a month, but spotify is at least $15
I hope to see improvments with the app but so far its limited functionaliy and quality is really nice. High quality mp3 sound. At least 192+
AWSOME!
please go away nice industry lawyers.
any bets on how long it lasts?

There is an Android app and it works the same way. Grooveshark is one of my favorite companies. I hope they keep on innovating and find a way to stay alive.

Can you please tell me what it's called? If it works with 2.0.1/2.1
Thank's :)

It appears to be named "Grooveshark". According to the description in the marketplace on my phone it requires "Android 1.5, 1.6 or 2.0" and is" only available to Grooveshark VIP members."

Disappointed as well. I wish I would have read the comments first so I wouldn't have wasted my time installing and making an account only to find out it was a paid subscription-based app, even though I seem to be able to use the website on my PC for free.
I'll stick with Slacker Radio, ShoutCast, Pandora, and Last.fm apps for now.

Grooveshark is my favourite website for listening to music. Could someone tell how to get the playlist offline?
