Opera 10.5 hits beta, still faster than Google Chrome
Yes, it's here! Yes, it's faster than Google Chrome! Well, truth is Opera 10.5 has been faster than Google Chrome ever since the Carakan engine was bolted on in December 2009...But the bottom line is that Opera 10.5 is shaping up to be a very compelling browser.
One big change I'm particularly happy about is that Google Reader is now fully functional out-of-the-box. In past versions Opera couldn't get past loading the header, but that's a thing of the past with 10.5 beta. Those Windows 7 shell integration features we showed you in December are still included, as is the nifty per-tab private browsing.
In addition to the blazing Javascript processing speed of Carakan, the usual Opera features are still here: Link synchronization, Turbo compression, Unite server, and more customization options than you can shake a stick at.
Opera seems to be most proud of the speed factor, calling 10.5 'the fastest browser on Earth." I suppose they went with that just in case some developers on Coruscant are coding something faster...
Curious to see just how fast Opera 10.5 beta is? Download it and try it out!
ed note: one thing which escaped earlier detection is the new recycle bin icon in the top-right corner. you guessed it, it provides one-click access to your recently closed tabs. nice!

"The nameless Opera browser is good. It's still nowhere as good as Firefox, which Mozilla calls the world's best browser. As they should."
What makes Firefox better?
It's bigger, slower, less secure and less functional ;)
"One of the most irritating things about the Opera browser is that it offers the user way, way, WAY too many adjustments."
Not really. It does offer a lot of adjustments, but it hides them away, so you won't deal with them unless you actually want to tweak it.

Oh...that last comment was to Lars. Dunno how I managed to stick it under Lebeu.

Ehh...
I'm sticking with Firefox 3.7a2pre. Speed, stability, tons of add-ons, and full Windows 7 integration can't really be beaten.

Seems to me that Opera has better Windows 7 integration than Firefox 3.7...

I don't know what could be better about it. Fx has jumplist support and works with Aero. Those are basically the only requirements for being considered Win7 compatible.

Yes Opera did managed to produced better in SunSpider but not that much only about 25ms better than Chrome in Peacekeeper is all around, Chrome is faster a little bit so we will see when the dust settles who is the final winner.
DrekeFeb 12th 2010 12:06PM
I would have to disagree there. Opera is faster at Peacekeeper.

I'd just like to point out, as an Opera fan, that Google Reader has always worked for me on Opera and the recycle bin icon has been there since I can remember (though it looked different before.)
Opera's a great browser, though you will get the rare site that doesn't work with it. But for the rest, it loads things at least as speedily as any other browser I've tried. On top of that, it now looks great on Windows Vista/7, and has a whole bunch of built-in tools. The only complaint about it I wouldn't argue with is the lack on addons, but honestly most addons don't add that much to the browsing experience.

Hey all- I'm trying 10.50 beta now (on my 32-bit Vista Home Premium box) and I withdraw most of my criticisms. It really is fast. One thing I said I noticed about Opera's browser is that it insists on loading the whole page before letting you see any of it. Mea culpa: that was my own adjustment. I kept it at the proper default: Preferences > Advanced > Browsing > Loading: Redraw instantly. Heh. Now go and download it and enjoy.

I also did a benchmark on my computer, and it almost confirmed the results obtained by Opera. Just in Sunspider my Chrome beats Opera by 70%, which is quite a difference to the results Opera got. Maybe you have an idea?
My benchmark can be found here:

In javascript, yes. However, other stuffs like rendering still lose.

My bechmaark results.
It seems that it lose to google chrome 5 in rendering, social networking, DOM operations and text parsing. So, they cannot really state they win.
