Google to deploy fiber to 50,000-500,000 U.S. households
Google has just announced plans to deploy insanely fast broadband to between 50,000 and 500,000 households in the U.S. They say they're going to offer the service at "competitive prices". It doesn't mean they're going into the business as an ISP per se (even though 500,000 households is not exactly a tiny number), but they're mainly going to use it as a large-scale connectivity experiment.

applications? hell to the yes! 1GPs fiber optic network would sure make my stupid little city a little more bearable.

sweet, but I think Google has an uphill battle here that even they cannot win. here in Utah there was a similar municipal fiber making rounds and the corruption of local officials was tremendous. Blocked at every avenue. Comcast and Qwest(DSL) have a monopoly here and I doubt that even Google can break that barrier.

Let's hope my application persuades them enough to bring the trial to Michigan State University.

I hope it hits my area - I am only a few miles from them.

A pox upon those who request this if their connection is faster than 10Mb. Out here in the boonies of Michigan, we max at 1.5Mb. If anyone deserves this, it should be someone like us.

Haha, I remember that and actually almost fell for that stupid one.... oy.

Oh you poor soul...try living with 1.5 Mbps for a while and then you can talk.

1.5 Mps? I wish we had that here. I'm still stuck with dial-up internet and average speeds of 18kbs. I've been praying for someone, anyone, to bring some form of high speed internet to where I live. Still nothing. Come on google, break the trend!

USA only? :(

Trying to live with 384kbps of downloads and 128kbps of upload? If google expand their services as ISP. I'll definitely grab it!

Look this is what goole has to do.. they have to deploy fiber where major companies have monopolized.. comcast, verizon, att, timewarner and a few others..
WHY?? because these basters already have fiber all over but they dont use it... with the help of google they might just upper their maximums to some more decent speeds..
