Facebook simplifies home page layout, inevitable complaining begins
Facebook has made some minor alterations the layout of its home page, aimed at simplifying your social networking experience. As with the last 5 design changes Facebook has made, this one has riled up users and inspired "bring back the old Facebook" groups. What's to get excited about, though? The changes seem mostly positive to me.
"News Feed" and "Live Feed" have been changed to the more descriptive "Top News" and "Most Recent," notifications have been clustered in a compact space in the top left corner (next to the Facebook logo), and the horizontal navigation at the top of the screen is now in a sidebar on the left of the screen.
Facebook has posted an easy-to-grasp tour of the new layout, in case you're having trouble finding certain features that have been relocated. The only one I find needlessly confusing is the logout button, which is now hiding under the "account" menu in the top right corner. What's the matter, Facebook? Don't want your users to log out?

My only complaint is that I used to be able to drag a friend list over the news feed in the left-hand bar, so that my news feed consisted only of events from those friends. Now I can’t do that anymore, and I’m forced to see people I’m not really that interested about.

Agreed. The loss of the filtering feature absolutely sucks.

Okay, I'm stupid. If you click on "Friends" on the left navbar, you can see your lists and show only status updates.
I need sleep.

Yes, Anthony, but what I meant is that you can’t make it the default anymore. I have a “close friends” list, and in the previous version I could drag & drop that list *over* the news feed in the left bar, so that when I opened Facebook, by default I would see just that list.

if you scroll down to the bottom of the page, click edit settings, it gives you a place to hide certain friends and to add other friends to a "priority" list. As far as the app filtering, it can still be done, you just have to hack together a URL for each app. For example, to get Farmville posts ONLY, go to http://www.facebook.com/home.php?filter=app_102452128776&show_hidden=true&ignore_self=true
For other apps, find the app id number and replace the 102452128776 in the above URL with the id of the desired app to filter.

I do not have it yet either but it looks more streamlined!

Initially I was slightly annoyed that the bookmarks are now only accessible from the main page, but an extra click is no big deal. I'm glad they cleaned up the News Feed/Live Feed thing. That was certainly one of my least favorite parts of the last update. All in all, not bad.
I'm generally far more concerned with changes they make to the privacy policy than any interface changes.

I like it. The search box doesn't fit well, though.

I like the new design, but I don't really know what "Top News" means. Does Facebook somehow pick news that is more exciting than other news and how does it know what constitutes "Top" news for me?

This is another rollout thing. My sister has had it for at least two months. I still want it on mine.

the news feed is really bad. The posts go from as much as 6 hrs old to recent and not in any particular order. One time I click to home, I get one set of posts, then the very next time (usually within a few seconds), I get another set of posts. This is the biggest problem I have with the new layout. I can't find posts I just saw a few minutes earlier.
