Movist is a strong VLC alternative for Mac
Though Macs ship with a reasonably good video player in the shape of QuickTime Player, the sheer number of different types of video files that are available out there can be frustrating to keep up with. You have to install various plugins to make QuickTime compatible with them all. Or, you can choose an all-in-one solution like VLC.
Of course, some people are not fans of the look and feel of VLC. If you're in that camp, check out Movist. Movist is another all-in-one video player for OS X that has so far handled every file type that I've thrown at it. You can even go into the preferences and manually control the decoder that you want to use for each file type in case one works better than another.
Movist's UI feels very at home on my Mac, and I like it enough that it has become my default video player. I'm looking forward to see what the next update holds for Movist, which appears to be a very active project hosted on Google Code.

Handled a problem MKV file right off the bat - much smoother than Perian QT and VLC; slightly smoother than Plex. Love the settings overlay controls - geeky but pleasant GUI.

Movist is a great piece of software, but it really bugs me that the nicked the Mac Rabbit VLC replacement icon set, instead of getting their own.

Hey Jason Clarke,
Have you heard of perian.org?
It's the swiss army knife of codecs.
The big win of perian over VLC (and presumably movist) is that quicktime plugins are not just about playing movies but about using movies in iMovie and iDVD. Installing perian let's you use all your clips in any software that supports quicktime.
you're welcome.

Doesn't change the fact that Perian is still unable to handle MKV files well. Or m2ts files at all.

VLC has a new beta out for Mac called Lumines. IT sports a very rough brand new interface. It's no where near done, but it is a start.

Do you have a link to the Lumines beta?
I can't seem to find it anywhere on the videolan.org website (nor Google for that matter).
Thanks.

Usually helps when you are in the same zip code word wise. No idea why I called it that. lol

I've just downloaded Movist and I'm impressed and I'd like to know if theres a way to stop the movie listing appearing on the video screen and have it instead appearing in its own window
I've never come across a player that lets my line up videos and will play them one after another without stopping. Great piece of software.
